Incidentally, from the international terminal you don't necessarily have to take the shuttle bus to the domestic terminal plus the subway to get down town. If you want the station area, there is a Nishi tetsu (one word but censor wouldn't allow it!)run bus which goes from the international terminal to the Hakata Bus Center next to Hakata stn for 190yen. However, you can be unlucky if you've just missed one as they're not all that frequent (1 or 2 an hour) and if you're subsequently going anywhere else by subway then you are better off just getting on it at the airport.

Unfortunately, this direct bus from the International terminal that I mentioned before was discontinued at the beginning of this month, so now you have to get on the shuttle bus to the domestic terminal.

Incidentally, I hear from friends visiting me from Korea that airfares to Fukuoka have become much cheaper of late - apparently the news about the earthquakes here has put some people off going. Dunno if this would make the plane cheaper than the boat for those weighing up the two, but maybe worth inquiring.

They changed the rules, you cant do one day visa runs in fukuoka anymore. Your boss must be looking at old information. But maybe, you shouldnt tell him this, play dumb, dont tell him until youre already here, and try to squeeze a free weekend in fukuoka out of him..

http://www.fukuoka-now.com/hotels/index.php

As wilde posted way back when on this thread, this link may be helpful.

I stayed one day at New Simple hotel near Hakata station for 4200 yen (now about 40,000 won). It's possible to stay cheaper if sharing or in a dormitory. I just took the single room. Small room, but clean and quiet (totally silent actually) with good shower and A/C. I had a fine sleep there. It seemed like the place was empty except for the check-in guy.

And as Hakata is just 2 stops from the airport it is easy to be on time.

Remember to allow about 20 minutes (may have to wait a bit) for shuttle bus between domestic and international terminals!

I added Japanese and Korea holidays on page 1 of the thread. Perhaps the consulate observes both.

July or August 13 - 15 - "Bon" Festival

This festival is celebrated either in July or August, depending on the area in Japan. Ceremonies honoring the dead are held. This (whenever it's happening) is a major holiday for the Japanese, and since much of the celebration revolves around honoring the dead who are believed to revisit the earth during the festival, much traveling is done by the Japanese people.

July 17 - Korean Constitution Day.

Anyone know if the consulate honors both Japanese and Korean holidays?

* * * * *

Monday in Japan is both a national holiday, and the first week day of the summer holiday season. Phoned Fukuoka consulate today (Friday) and they said they'd be closed on Monday.

Anyone going to be around on Tuesday night?

And hey, does anyone know more about staying in saunas over there? I'm used to sleeping marae-style or camping kindof, and have got my earplugs, and am happy to save what i can at this stage. It'd be good to know where and how much it was recently if anyone knows about it.

For anyone going to Japan on Asiana Airlines, be aware that the pilots went on strike on Sunday. As of Monday when I called the airline they could not give me any definate answer about the flight for Friday.

I would suggest calling the airline the day before and the day of the flight to check on the status. There is no point in going to the airport if they are just going to cancel the flight.

Here are pieces of the article with the link (Note: The link will become inactive after 7 days)

Walkout threatens overseas cargo flights

By Kim So-young

Asiana Airlines management and its striking pilots' union suspended contract talks yesterday as a walkout canceled scores of flights and threatened time-sensitive overseas shipments

Kim said the airline was scrambling to arrange alternative flights for people whose flights were cancelled but said it was difficult to get seats on other airlines during the peak vacation season.

"We're trying but it's almost impossible to help passengers use other airlines because international seats are fully booked at this time of the year," Kim said. "For most passengers, we have no option but to refund ticket costs."

Like Monday, nearly half of Asiana's domestic flights and all of its cargo flights were canceled yesterday. A flight to Sydney, Australia, became the first casualty among international flights, which have been giving priority in staffing.

The cancelled 8 p.m. flight to Sydney from Incheon International Airport affected about 280 outbound passengers and 130 people who were ticketed to fly from Sydney on the return leg.

"We think it's possible to maintain the current level of flight operations for one week."

But Asiana officials warned that more international flights will be affected if the strike drags on and said labor and management remain far apart on about 80 issues.

http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/2005/07/20/200507200003.asp

Asiana says all international flights will happen as scheduled, except for those to Sydney Austrailia. (See Link Below) It is still highly recommended to contact the airlines as conditions could change.

C4 info.

It`d be great to hear from anyone who has had to apply for a C4 from Osaka, cos my current boss phoned there and was told that all the sealed transcripts nonsense was necessary there.

So yesterday I went to Fukuoka, held my breath, and, they weren`t even mentioned. The immigration dude hardly glanced at my originals; just wanted the photocopies.

Futhermore, the guy before me was not charged for his C4, but I was hit up for y3,600. When I asked why the difference, he said it was cos the other guy had a British passport, and was applying for a visa for less than 6 months.

Cheap Sleeps

Having gleaned the tip from here somewhere, being up for the adventure and needing to save some cash, I thought I`d see about that idea of staying over in an internet cafe. Made it to Tenjin Station area and ran into a couple of likely whitie-lads who pointed me to Popeye Media Cafe, literally just around the corner behind the station, and along the road at the first intersection.

If you can find someone who reads a bit of Japanese, you may be able to find the map for Fukuaka or Osaka or whatever...
http://www.media-cafe.ne.jp/index.html

Brilliant place. Kind of a mixture of a DVD/PS2 bang, but with great massage chairs, and you can get different pricing options. I just got premium special or something, meaning 10 hours in a cubicle with a reclining massage chair (I was sceptical... but now I`m in love... Want to take it home with me...). They are cubicles though, and not actually bang or your own enclosed rooms... but cushions and blankets are help yourself available, shower`s free including all the extras like towel etc., drinks machines are all free, staff are helpful though a bit noisy when cleaning up at about 5am after a bunch of college kids finally leave after the 5 hour deal. But anyway, bottom line is it`s about y2,600 for all that.

Obviously not as comfy as your own bed in your own room, but an interesting alternative if the coins are few.

Asiana have announced that by tomorrow all international flights will not be affected...

The airline, however, pledged to operate all of its international routes normally for the next week "for the convenience of passengers."

"We'll fully operate international flights, which number 110 to 117 a day, unless flight schedules are inevitably changed because of bad eather," Yoon Byung-in, vice president of Asiana, told reporters.

I am flying fro Seoul to Fukuoka in August and my tickey cost is 287 500 won.

I just thought that a "current" airfare price might be helpful.

not for a visa run, but for general purposes - anyone have reccs for a nicer, spontaneous-gues-friendly hotel in Tenjin, and bars other than the HappyC0ck and CrazyC0ck and Sam&Daves?

Fukuoka s a pretty nice town, and there is always the Skydome & nice little parks. Nightlife & cool restaurants are more of a concern; budget doesn't really matter . . .

Regards,

G.
