Hi all,

About buying a computer in S. Korea.

Now I know about the operating system being in Korean (if you buy a comp there), and the 220V electricity, though I imagine you can find power sources that have the switch in back that changes from 220v to 110v....

ANYWAY

I was wondering if you can build your own computer like you can States side, you know pick your own motherboard, how much RAM you want, Hard drive, graphic card, etc... PC, no Mac...and Top of the line, high quality hardware...

OR can you Only buy pre-assembled machines????

Are prices about the same as the US for CD-writers, motherboards, Monitors, etc..?

64 bit technology?

Laptop quality and prices the same +/- the US?

Just trying to figure out if I should buy and take...or buy on location?

What about guarantees for hardware bought in Korea, service packages etc...??

Thx for any info.

(yes, I'm planning on staying for at least 2/3 years)

Maybe a mod will move this one to the Technology forum soon...

Yes, you can find everything you want here. You can build it, have it built (in hours, I might add), and the prices are comparable to back home if you know where to look. The laptops tend to be a bit more pricey, in my opinion. The latest and greatest top-end video cards seem to be more pricey, but the other stuff is pretty comparable.

You will want to check out Yongsan and Technomart -- two big places for computer parts and stuff. Yongsan has it's own stop, and Technomart is located on the Green Line at Gangbyeon station in East Seoul. Computers are near the upper floors. Yongsan might be a little cheaper, but is kind of an older/less organized atmosphere to shop in.

If you are going to be in Seoul, then you will want to go to Yongsan as it is much better than technomart. The place to get to in Yongsan is easily found by following Lemons Guide to Electronics Shopping in Yongsan hmm.. just noticed the pics are down.

The main spot for computer shopping is sunin () plaza. Derrek is right when he talks about laptops being overpriced in Korea, but your desktops are compariably priced to back home and easy enough to assemble.
