I'm guessing your laptop travelled alot and it wasn't on a cooler pad...

And any of this is unusual/unexpected treatment for a laptop? They are made to be stand-alone and portable, are they not?

I was discussing how usage impacts a laptop's lifespan and making the point that a laptop used as a desktop replacement could provide reliable service.

I understand this. I was just making a point that if a laptop will have a limited lifespan by simply being used in the capacity for which it was intended.....well.....that's just silly, isn't it? Additionally, if they need a cooler pad to live, then that too is just silly.

I agree that they may well need one to last longer. In the race for speed and dominance in the portable market, they are often neglecting heat issues.

They call them laptops, but no reasonable person dares run it on their lap for fear of "N"th degree burns!

I'm starting to get very, very tempted by the Apple iBook range. For the price it seems pretty unbeatable (of course, much cheaper in Japan than here or in the UK).

For what the OP wants to do it sounds pretty suitable, as well.
