Oh yeah, all the time! That's one thing I've always noticed about Korean bosses. Kind-hearted and generous to a fault.

now, now, JongnoGuru, i didn't say ALL THE TIME...or 'ALL' of anything. let's not go to extremes here. Crying or Very sad
i'll rephrase.
i know of 4 instances where korean employees received cash advances from their employers. two of those businesses were hogwans. Razz

Well I've just conducted my own on-the-spot, off-the-cuff, mucho-scientificamente survey of four live Koreans who happen to be right here. That's 3 kinda-on-the-youngish-side kickin' & squealin' ones, and 1 who's about 40 and tends to agree with whatever I say. And all but one have worked for Korean-owned companies.

To my surprise, I'm not getting the usual "That's right, Guru! You tell 'em how it is!" level of support and consensus that I've come to expect. So perhaps I'm wrong about this. And if I'm wrong, that means they're right. (They're fired, but they're right! Wink )

Actually, nobody here has ever asked for a salary advance from an employer (& certainly not from me), and they say such requests would be rare, one-off, one-time things. And if the company were very small (i.e., the boss is the owner/manager/hirer & paymaster all rolled into one) then they would see it more in the nature of a personal loan; that is, not something subject to "official company policy", but subject entirely to the personal inclination of the boss to extend it or not. Some bosses are stingy, some are generous. Some have their own financial house in good order, some live in constant fear for the safety of their kneecaps.

More common than salary advances would be salary delays, late payment by clients, and (particularly since the 1990s) job-security concerns that come with high unemployment in key age groups... None of which tends to create an environment conducive for salary advances.

However, rather than small company vs. big company, they feel that Captain's situation being a foreigner in Korea (having no family, relatives, support network), a kind boss would and should help out. Of course, then it's a matter of how much or how frequently, and that's something we don't really know. As for the moralising lectures, they know a lot of bosses do that -- it's part of the traditional father-figure role of bosses here. But they're rather surprised a Korean boss would lecture an adult foreigner like that. (Mainly, they're surprised his English would be that good. Razz )

Teufelswacht, that's about right.

Homer, whatever.

I'd say this thread has been squeezed of all its wholesome goodness, and can be put to bed on the compost pile to stimulate overall thread regeneration, huh? In other words, unless someone else wants to snicker about how asking for advances is a dumb idea, the thread is dead.

The end. Thanks for coming out. Teufel came first, Jongno Guru a close second, with Homer humping along behind in last place. But everybody gets a 'better luck next time' t-shirt and 'quit yer complainin'' baseball cap.

This thread has been sponsored by McDonalds, breakfast of champions.

And I thought (despite mounting counter evidence) that all you "Joined in 2003-ers" all knew each other like you do your own brothers & sisters! Laughing

Its seems to me your boss was right in "scolding" you and questioning how you spent "his" money. Don't you know how to budget? Don't you have any freinds who could lend you a bit of cash, so you don't have to go begging your boss for an advance every couple of weeks. It seems to me you are taking advantage of his generosity a bit more than would be acceptable. If I was your boss, I would be a little pissed at you to for coming to me and asking me for money all the time.

You say you send it home so you can't touch it. Why send all of it home when you know for a fact you'll need more later on? You also said you did it often last year, so surely you have figured out how much you spend in a month. I think you need some professional budgeting advice mate. Stop the whining and grow up and start managing your finances a bit better. Then maybe you'll get some respect you so want from your "jumped up little prince!".

Of the OP
It seems to me that the Captain simply stood up for himself. By pointing out to the mini hitler of the hogwan that at least one of his business practices was illegal he pissed him off. Now in order for lil adolf to re-assert his dominance over his English speaking slave he would have to put him in his place.

Mini hitler could have simply said to Captain that this is the last advance..that he does not give advances unless it is an emergency. But no...he needs to re-assert his dominance so starts talking down to him.

A typical overreaction by the wongjim. You did not bow to my awthawateh you are fired. I have witnesses that you quit. More lies.

There is only one person on this planet that has any right to 'scold' me and that is my mother.

I have met alot of people working here in Korea and the amount of crap they(and sometimes even I) put up with is truly astounding. If my boss in Canada tried any of that crap they would have been slapped soundly.[/quote]

In the end:

Bad boss for sure.

But, the pay advance thing was excessive in my opinion and it seems, from your own admission to be something you did in your previous job as well (was your previous boss also a demonic tyrant?).

None of this makes you a bad person or someone to look down on CK. As I have said, it is too bad you had to go through this bad situation.

However, by your posts in this thread there seems to be more to the story then you are telling and a pattern of behavior. You are right, no one can tell you what to do and that is not what I did.

Best of luck with your next job.

Want an advance on that next advance?

I'm going to say thanks, everyone, again. But some dumb 'tard is going to pop out of the woodwork with some sniping remark or suspicion 'there is more to this than he's telling'.

It's truly pathetic that foreigners end up fighting each other. Because they understand each other. Like ape-men on an island throwing coconuts at each other. And no Korean cares.

I'll concentrate on the good times and the good people on this forum. And may it keep on rockin'. Laughing
