|
|
I just put up a web site for my school. I submitted links to search engines, and I was wondering if there was any way to increase the odds of my site coming up in a search. Anyone know how I can do this? |

The key seems to be having links to your page from sites viewed as authoritative. For example, a link from Yahoo's subject index is page rank gold. More than one link to your site increases your ranking. People tried for a while to create "link farms". You set up all kinds of geocities and angelfire pages or whatever and link them to your page. But when you're dealing with the minds of Google, that didn't last long.
Part of my daily enjoyment is reading my site meter report and finding what key terms people use on google to find one of my various sites. I then enter these terms into google and discover this key term collection brings up my site as the number one hit. |

We are number one on Google if you simply enter john sheena
Hits has a lot to do with it too. If your page is being linked to, that's one thing. If it is getting no hits (which is unlikely) it'll make little difference.
e.g. our website is linked to in only three places on the web. you can find out what links to your website by entering, for example
link:www.johnandsheena.co.uk
Mine only shows a handful of links. Two are really obscure and I have no idea where they came from. My basic point is that this is not the reason why if you enter john sheena into Google, we are number one. It is hits/visits pure and simple and depending on these, we rank anywhere from 1 to 5 in competition with two other sites which really irritate me cos they are so tacky. But I digress. The issue is that if you can attract traffic, you will get a higher page rank.
My approach for this is to do the following:
have a couple of click hungry aspects to your website - we have a forum for students with 80 members and 13 posts a day average, we also have a photo gallery which has had over 3000 visits in the two months since it was set up and the blog does pretty well too
put key search terms in all the title tags of your main pages - every single main page on our site has the words John and Sheena in the title
get membership of a couple of well known forums/sites and link to your site in your sig/profile - this month so far, I've had 60 referrals from Dave's cafe from my sig below. I also have an account on virtualtourist.com and that is a mega site and get lots of referrals from there.
give your website address out to all and sundry - my adult students for example (I get about 40 new ones every 7 weeks) get introduced to our site on the first day when they use it in pairs on laptops to find out as much as they can about me. They then use this info and mix it with some false stuff to challenge other groups in the class to a quiz. AFter that, they're hooked on the photos and blog stuff there. Our site is basically used by people all over the world to keep in touch with us. Heck I've had two long lost friends from over ten years ago regain contact with us from it as well as a guy I've never met track me down and ask directions to his girlfriend's place because I lived in the same small town in Japan she's living in and he wants to spring a surprise visit on her from Oz!
So, you can do all the fancy stuff with the seach engine optimisation stuff but I've never bothered with that but simply just generated regular and interesting (well I think so anyway!) content and let everyone know. It didn't happen overnight but it's worked for us. |
