Not a thread,

Just want to wish everyone out in the field today a very happy and merry Teacher's Day

I want to give a big holler out to the hogwon Teachers.

They are the ones that slave the 6 to 8 hours a day after all the regular teacher go home, they are the true backbone of the teaching industry here.

I give tons of kudos to you

Everyone congrats!!!

Drink it up!
Live it up!

It's Teacher's day? Perhaps that explains all the flowers and potted plants being carried around to all the offices at my uni except for those inhabited by us pesky foreign teachers. For us, not even a bud, nor a weed. Apparently, we're not regarded as 'real' teachers in these parts, even though we toil longer and harder for less pay than the 'real' teachers. (Frankly, I'd settle for a bud or some weed.) Just another subliminal reminder that we're only the EFL sideshow.

I got the cutest note from a middle school girl telling me she loves me and I'm such a great teacher. It almost makes up for one class today where they just ignore me and another where they do nothing but complain that it's boring. I'll have to get her email so I can send her a birthday card or something after I quit.

My high school had this great Teacher's Day activity day on Friday.

In the morning the students give gifts to the teachers and performed little skits for us. For lunch the parents layed out this awesome spread including lots of free beer. And in the afternoon we had a soccer tournament between the students and teachers. I got to be on the Principal's ringer team, the only one that actually beat the students. Great fun.

And all this right after I got back from a week's vacation in Jejudo. God, I love teaching in a public\private school. Soooo much better than hackwon hell.

But it's going to take awhile for me to shake this paranoid, watch my back, don't drop the soap attitude I've picked up from working too long in hackwons. After hackwons, it's just so hard to trust a Korean employer ever again. Anyone else had this problem?

Haha... my only two wrapped presents were from the mothers of my one, and thankfully only, pointless kindie class where the kids learn nothing. The flowers from some of the older kids that may have involved their own initiative mean so much more. But nothing beats this:
