|

So, I'm helping out my friend in upgrading her computer, a feat which normally I'd feel very comfortable with, but this time...its a laptop. My question is:
1) What is the best amount of RAM for a newish LT (price range if possible too)
2) Whats a good vid card- she REALLY likes the SIMS 2 so it has to be a good one.
Also, this would be a good time to give shout outs to your boys in yongsan- I'll give your friends some friendly business if you'd like. |

I was looking at the price of memory for notebooks, it seems to be depressingly expensive. Back home you could get a 512 stick of notebook ram for under 80k, but here it's more like 120k... Rule for laptop is to go for as much as you can afford, because generally you're throwing it away if you have to upgrade again later.
As for video cards, what kind of laptop is it to have an upgradable video card? |

The newest PCI-Express laptops will have an upgradeable video card. It slips in the bottom of the unit. I haven't seen one in reality though, and I can only imagine the costs.
To the OP...no upgrade for video, and check the specs for the ceiling on RAM. |

Graphics chip maker nVidia today has a modular video card format for laptops everywhere, and it's making the standard open, even to competitors.
The new format, dubbed Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM), will initially come in three different flavors. MXM I aims for low-end video and its corresponding low-end power consumption and heat output. MXM III aims for power users, with the highest power consumption and heat output. MXM II falls in between.
The specifications are designed such that any "family" can later be upgraded to a different module in the same family, with all GPUs of a given family having similar heat and power specifications. Thus an outmoded GPU could be conveniently removed and replaced with a more modern one, even one from a completely different manufacturer.
Virtually all Asian notebook manufacturers have signed on to produce laptops with the new modular format. Since most OEMs rely on these firms for their own laptop brands, MXM will likely become standard in every laptop.
nVidia's first offering in the MXM format will be its GeForce Go 6 chip.
Nvidia press release. |

A good vid card for a lappy is a x700 (x600 seems ok) or a 6600go and up. I wouldn't bother with any thing else. I just ordered a z71V laptop from discountlaptops.com I know the z71 has a upgradable vid. |
