It was kind of an eye opener how ignorant they were regarding places outside of Korea. Really uniformed...

No, Jack -- that's how they were when I first got here. Smile

I've sharpened the sushi knives, so watch out.

My favorite was drawing a picture of a Korean kite on the blackboard, which is, you know, a rectangle with a circle in the middle. Unfortunately I made the rectangle in the horizontal position. This caused my students to hiss madly. "NO TEACHER THAT'S A JAPANESE FLAG! IT'S NOT A KOREAN KITE!" (Well they probably said that without the articles and the verbs.)

Okay. So I gave the chalk to a girl to draw a proper Korean kite. Of course she drew exactly what I drew, a rectangle with a circle in the middle, save that she oriented it vertically.

Lord.

Another time I drew Korea on the board and to define Asia I drew Japan. More mad howls. I had to draw a picture of a turtle ship blowing up Tokyo with a nuclear cannon to get 'em settled down.

As an American, just think "middle American, Iraq or Saudi Arabia during a gas crisis." Or think about America's reaction to France and all things French. French's mustard had to go on record saying they have nothing to do with France.

As a Canadian, I just think "my kids are no different from Canadian kids, save Canadian kids are very anti American." Or when I think about Quebec in the '70s when you had bilingual stop signs, English people would spray paint out the French and French people would spray paint out the English. You always knew if you were in a French or English 'hood based on what language was visible on the stop sign.

Would it be too petty to photocopy a replacement patch for Japan that you could stick back up on the map... while "accidentally" making it larger than before? Twisted Evil

Now THAT one is funny.

Only everyone could figure out it was I who did it. Embarassed

Someone did this this week, only they patched it with white paper and used a crayon to color it in. I wonder if it was the Japanese teacher?

Sometimes even making any reference at all to Japan gets that old emotional reaction. Example today: middle school kids mentioned that taxis are expensive. I said, not really, in Korea they are not as expensive as in the US and Canada and Japan. Just a simple statement of fact, but they seemed offended by the mere mention of Japan. Weird. Like I implied it was better because taxis cost more?
