| I just applied for my pension refund last week. I'm not sure if the requirements are the same for americans and canadians but I had to bring my passport, flight ticket, ARC card, pension paper and passbook for the bank account the money was to be deposited in. I had to fill out two papers, she told me that it usually takes 1-2 months...and gave me a card for the man who takes care of canadian refunds. |
Are you leaving Korea? I thought one had to leave Korea to get it, which always left me wondering how I would get mine if I turn out to be (which I likely will) a lifer.... |

| I have a question. If an American leaves her public school job before the contract is finished but giving the proper 60 days notice, will she still be eligible to receive her pension contributions? Or is it only if you complete your contract that you'll get it back? |

| Pensions arent' tied to contract completion. I know someone who left two weeks before her contract ended, and got her pension refunded. |

| A question: I heard that Americans CAN get a lump sum refund but only one time. So if I work here for 2 years, go home, get my lump sum, come back and work another 2 years I won't get another lump sum refund. Is this accurate? If so, how long does one have until claiming a refund? Can I wait 10 or 12 years? |
Where did you hear that? TECHNICALLY I think you're not allowed to collect the lump sum refund more than once in a lifetime, but Ive heard of many people doing it before, both on this board and elsewhere. Maybe slipping through the cracks by applying to a pension office in a different part of Korea or something....
Someone have some first-hand input to add this before I begin the application process soon? |

I have an interesting question about this lump sum pension. I am an Irish and Canadian citizen but I have been residing in Canada for the last 16 years. I recently came to Korea but travelled on my Irish passport. Will I still be eligible for the pension refund even though I came in on my Irish passport and on my immigration card it says Ireland?? I really hope so as Canada is the country that I will be returning to
Thanks for any assistance |

I heard about this after I came back to the States. A friend of mine who returned a little earlier than me went to the Social Security office here and inquired about it. They told he would get the pension money from Korea after he retires. It now sounds like the office had no idea what they were speaking about.
My question, how do I go about getting this 5 and a half years worth of pension now that I am stateside...and I will be returning to Korea in about six weeks to work for a different institution...am I still elligle for this or will it carry over to the new job? |
It seems you COULD get your Korean pension upon retirement, if you don't ask for it to be paid as a lump sum when you leave. |

| Oi Girl, I believe that your Korean pension number is actually the same as your ARC number. I applied for pension money once before (about 2 years ago) and I think that the ARC number was written on the form as the pension number. |

| Yes. I just came back from there two minutes ago. Your pension number is the same as your ARC number. |

That's when they were giving any pension to people in cash, I think. Actually, I wasn't even here then, so I'm not sure. Me thinks that you're not going to get any payouts, but I could be wrong.

If you're not a Canadian citizen(passport, etc) and registered as such, I don't think you can claim anything. Good question to ask at the pension office though. You know, you might be able to get it with arguing your case...please let us know. |

I suspect you're right, but has anyone ever had a number looked up for them? I turned in another ARC four years ago. (You would think that sooner or later I'd learn that I'm NOT leaving for good!) |

| I completed the paperwork on June 13th for the refund. They said I should have the refund wired to my account within a month. It has been 5 weeks. How much longer should it take? Should I contact the Pension office now? |

I second the statement and back it up with "I indeed left Korea and received ALL payments both parties made. It took a month, but I got it.
