I could have sworn there have been several threads regarding this topic but the search feature here at Dave's really sucks for me.

Anyways, I have just finished David Sedaris' new book "Dress your Family in Denim and Courdurouy". If you haven't read this man's books, they are absolutely fabulous. I'm not an obsessed fan or anything but his books are quite well written and very entertaining. And it's great to see the humour evolve slightly from book to book: just enough so that he doesn't seem like a one trick pony.
"me talk pretty one day" is also a fantastic book. And his first one i read "Barrel Fever" is also quite good. But "dress your family" and "me talk" are really great collections of short stories about how insane his family is/was. It's a great read.

i'm actually trying to find other humourists such as him. Not overly political; short story oriented; not too twisted but dark.
any have suggestions?

Chuck Palahniuk. He's the author of Fight Club (the Brad Pitt movie), but this is definitely not his best. Be sure to check out 'Survivior' and 'Choke'. Dark humour. Excellent reads.

Of Human Bondage, W. Somerset Maugham.

Possibly the best novel not titled The Brothers Karamazov.

If you like religious and philosophical humour...this is it.....very brilliant writing (he creates the zaniest metaphors).

Of course, anything by Kurt Vonnegut is great too.

I found Sedaris was running out of good stories with his latest book. Many of the stories seemed quite short and nothing really laugh out loud funny like Me Talk Pretty. What Sedaris really needs to do is delve into some subcultures, like nudists or apple pickers, and bring his wit to bear.

If you can get WP Kinsella's Indian story collections, set on his Hobbema Reserve universe, it's great stuff.

The Bible. Meh. Too much dialog in the second half, too violent and focused on incest in the first half.
