I have sent my CV and photo to many many recruiters over the past weeks, and have yet to hear from any of them. I am 51 years old, and I know that this is a problem in Japan, is this the same for Korea??? I was hoping that the discrimination would not follow me everywhere, but I am beginning to feel that it might.

Are there schools that hire those over 45? Should I bypass the recruiters and apply directly to the schools??

Any input and ideas would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruce

I know of schools that don't hire people over 35, but keep on plugging, I'm sure you'll find something...

please give us more details. What type of position are you looking for? What degrees do you have? How much experience do you have?

Age should not matter that much! If you are looking for a University position then go to FAQ where you will find some excellent instructions by "The Beaver" on how to secure a University position in Korea.

I am 51 and have no problems, but I am only interested in university positions. Most reputable places are looking for content over packaging.

Just give is more details so we can better advise you.

Well, look at the bright side:

You are automatically discriminated against and excluded by the worst schools -- so don't worry! The ones looking for that "perfectly beautiful specimen" for advertising purposes are the ones that probably don't control the students and/or offer a really poor program. To an extent, we are all "window dressing" but some schools take it too far. Those schools will automatically disqualify you based on age. Consider it a gift.

Some private/public high schools will not turn you away. Check into those situations.

Yes, there are people your age working here. If you have a beard, then shave it (many Koreans consider beards to mean you're shifty).

Also, if you're serious about getting a job here, then just come over. Don't rely on recruiters. I would suggest you call Ann at www.worknplay.co.kr to see if she can fit you into a public school gig. I know her, and they won't screw you around on pay using a funky bank account like some other shady recruiters do.

What are your qualifications? Some qualifications can help.

A very excellent point. It doesn't take much to find a bad hagwon that will rip you off. It takes a while to find a decent school. If you're 24 and surfer blonde, you'll get all the pie in the sky hagwons tempting you. If you're 50, at least your age filters out the goon shows and you're forced to spend the time we'd all have to spend finding a serious school.

There seems to a niche market for teachers in their 50s and 60s in this country.

It's the teachers in their 30s and especially 40s who get discriminated against the most.
