Actually he wants to study Spanish with me!! I have to pass a proficiency test in Spanish for future grad school, so unfortunately, my time has been more focused on Spanish than on Korean at the moment. So maybe Spanish will be the language....I'm just beginning Spanish, so maybe we can start fresh together. I know that another poster, Cedar, speaks Chinese to her husband, although neither of them are native speakers of the language. I just read your other post...yeah, it will be hard for him to study Spanish...but you should have heard him belt out Richie Valen's "La Bamba" at the local noraebang with a pretty decent Spanish accent...I was floored Shocked
But since we plan to move to the states (Oregon, hopefully!) he also wants to speak English. He said he now wants to speak/study English...now if only I can pull him away from Tooniverse to study Laughing

actually, i've heard it said many times that Koreans take to Spanish better than English, the pronunciation is easier for them

i know a 50 year old man who moved to Guatemala and is now, 2 years later fluent in Spanish- his wife is in her 40's and its the same with her

To address the OP's original topic:

Western women do just fine in the "looks" and "attractiveness" departments.

Personally, I am attracted to feminine women. No, not "weaker," or "less intelligent," or "less equal" women. Feminine women.

I cannot define in concrete terms what I mean by "feminine." There is an ineffableness to the traits that constitute femininity.

To my mind, Western women have (for the most part, but not entirely) been gradually becoming less "feminine," and the gender distinctions between men and women in the West have been blurring for some time.

(Again, I would like to stress that I am talking in very general terms. There are, obviously, feminine women in the West. They are just harder to find, and are, I believe, dwindling in number.)

I suspect that many Western men, once having travelled outside of their home countries, quickly realize how feminine (and alluring) non-Western women can be.

Of the two or three dozen or so Western men I know here in Korea, only two are three are not attracted to Asian women, or do not prefer Asian women to Western women. (Note: this does not mean they reject Western women, but rather there is a marked preference.)

Men on the board, without being disrespectful to the women here, do any of you agree with me? South American women, Southern European women, Scandinavian women, and South- and Northeastern Asian women all seem to have a greater degree of femininity than do "Western" women.

If by 'Western' you mean Anglo (UK, USA, NZ, AUS) then I think many would agree. A lot of women seem to think imitating the worst traits of men (being foulmouthed, aggressive and obnoxious) is some statement of equality.

That's a very curious observation. Do you mind elaborating? I'm not picking an argument. I'm just very surprised and wonder what you're basing that on. Please reply - I'm very interested.

Most women I've met report the opposite. Most western guys are fascinated by the local women, and (the good) Korean guys are usually too shy to strike up conversation. There's plenty of drunken married agoshis ready to pounce on them of course! A perfectly sober one was trying to pick me up tonight, even though I mentioned my husband and child about 20 times... I'm quickly learning that being a wife and mother appears to be no obstacle as far as a lot of men are concerned...Rolling Eyes Ah yes, and there's the GIs of course...

If you want an easy date, whether you are a man or a woman, go to a country like the Phillipines, where your passport to a 1st world nation will elevate you to the ranks of a superstar.

I sort of agree, though there's a flip side to your point that you might not like so much. I find many of the expat men to be taking on some of the nastier "feminine" traits, like cattiness and whininess. Before you disagree- take a look around this board. Maybe men are the same way at home and I just never noticed, but I doubt it.

i am always amused by men who figure women who are assertive or whatever to be 'not real women'.

i wasn't put on earth to pick up socks, wash dishes or make you feel better about yourself.
wanting someone who treats you as an equal and respects you is something that ppl should be looking for.
if u don't like some swearing women, don't date them.

alas, this seems a problem of the older generation.

When I read this, I thought "Ack! I've found DW's sock! (May he rest in peace.)" However, you do have a point.

Beside the ruffles, lace, flowers, heels, sparkles and miniskirts that Korean women continually sport, Canadian women look like lumberjacks. I'll cheerfully admit that I'm more comfortable in plain sweaters and tailored pants than in the "doll clothes" in many of the shops, but some of it has rubbed off on me. I now own a few articles of pink clothing, but I draw the line at those "bling bling" hair clips.

Of course! It's proof of both your desirableness and fertility. Very primal.

The part about nice K-guys being shy looks to be true. But at ex-pat bars where the sex ratio is like a military base it seems bloody easy for a few of my female friends with, um, nice personalities, to pick up western guys. If they don't mind GIs they're laughing. Whether they still fancy them when they're sober may be another question.

Question Question Question Please tell that to my female college students! They're always coming to class caked in make up and, one after the other, their eyes take on a new 'round' shape, courtesy of Korea's booming trade in plastic surgery. They constantly fret about their weight, and even the stick insects report being told by their boyfriends that they are fat! I'm quite concerned about some of these poor young things.

Koreans seem even more focussed on beauty than westerners, sadly.

That's not Korean culture, it's the invasion of western culture into Asian societies. Did Korean college students cake on their makeup like that 30 years ago? How did the plastic surgery industry become such a booming trade in Korea in the first place? What will Asian cultures be like 10 or 20 years from now?

The U.S. hasn't been "Anglo" since the pilgrims.

Next you'll be claiming there was no prostitution in korea before the Incheon landings.

I think regardless of what the prevailing college fashions were 30 years ago, you'd have to have a pretty twisted view to believe that Koreans rarely looked in the mirror until they turned on their new TVs and watched "Happy Days". Image is very very important in Korean culture.
