How long does it take to get Korean citizenship for a Canadian or American family?

Waiting for the Citizenship Document...
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta's daily newspaper, reported on May 17 that a Korean family who applied for U.S. citizenship was unable to attend their relative's funeral due to a delay in the issuance of their citizenship certificates. In the readers' column, Kim Jin, a second grader at Westminster High School in Atlanta, said, "I still have not received my citizenship certificate probably because of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I thought I would get it within 750 to 800 days (from July to September 2004) after applying for it in June 2002 when I came to the U.S., the 'Land of Dreams and Freedom,' four years ago."

Kim said, "The U.S. has become my second home, but ironically the 'Land of Freedom and Dreams' blocked my dream to see my grandfather for the last time and my freedom to study abroad."

I thought Dreamland was here in Seoul. My students always talk about it. I didn't know there was another in Atlanta.

South Korea's Justice Ministry announced on March 16, 2003, that it is planning to ease the eligibility requirements for foreigners applying for permanent residency or citizenship in Korea. Previously, only foreigners who have invested over $500,000 and lived in Korea for eight years would be eligible for permanent residency status.

The new rules would allow foreigners who work for foreign companies investing over $500,000 to be eligible for permanent residency status as long as they have lived in Korea for eight years. Foreigners, who themselves have directly invest over $500,000 in Korea, would be eligible for citizenship after residing in Korea for eight years. Other foreigners would be eligible for permanent residency if they have resided in South Korea for twelve years. An official from the Ministry of Justice commented, "We are planning to draw up the measures within the first half of this year, after consulting corporate investor bodies."

So if I've saved every receipt for 8 years, do you suppose I'd qualify as investing?
