I've never heard of a player being modded to region-free through hardware changes in Yongsan. If others have better knowledge I hope they speak up, but I seriously doubt it exists.

You should pay under 80,000w for a region-free player in Yongsan. This is still well above world prices. You want the cheapest made-in-China player you can find- those are most likely to be region-free out of the box, or easily made to be so.

There are a few ways to make almost any player region free. A program called DVDRegionFree works great (I used it on my POS Gateway in the states) and is probably the easiest. You can also "flash" a player, and use a program called DVD Genie to switch back and forth. I've done it successfully many times, but the process is dangerous to your drive and you run the risk of ruining your player permanently. If any of you plan on trying it, pm me or read up on it extensively. Cheers

Hi - first, thanks for the input!

I'd assumed that the guy asking the question was talking about stand-alone set-top DVD players for TVs, not the in-the-computer drive kind, which it seems (me assuming again, based on the word "drive") you're talking about. Am I wrong on either assumption?

Hi Lemon,

Just wanted to ask if you or anyone else could help me out.

I want to buy a laptop when I get to Korea but not before as im strapped for cash. Ive been reading all your useful suggestions about buying in the US. This sounds great but problem is im british and in spain.

I thought of ordering online but then I read that you get taxed heavily when you recieve it in Korea. Also considered buying, getting it sent to uk where my family could take it out of the box and say its an old laptop worth bugger all, but this sounds like alot of hassle for everyone involved.

Shuld I sucker up and pay the price in Yongsan or online in Korea?

Are laptops realy that much more expensive? Even than europe? Confused Shocked

Many thanks for any help or suggestions you or anyone else can give.

Actually, I'd prefer to buy the laptop in Korea rather than the UK or the US if I was planning to live in Korea for a year or more. Why? Warranty. Laptops are notoriously fragile and fickle, and many (most?) laptop warranties are not international. And they're not so easy to repair, unlike desktops, so it's not like you'd just take it down to the road to the computer guy to get the screen or something fixed.

When you buy a laptop be prepared for two things: a Korean/English keyboard (not a big deal - if it really annoys you there's always the option of plugging in a $10 external one), and Korean Windows. Using a Korean OS sucks, so either bring one with you, or buy English XP from the guy in the tunnel who sells XP for $5. He says the discs he sells are legal, but I'm not so sure, personally. Just passing that on.

I was wondering if you have experience or know of unlocking phones, I wanna take my phone in korea and use it in the states. I have heard of unlocking but not really sure how to go about it. I looked online, but I don't trust sites that ask for payment to get a phone unlocked.

Do you know of anywhere I get this done and done right?

Any know if you can get burned PS2 games in Yong-san and if so, where?

I remember in the good old days...you could buy burned PS1 games everywhere. I find the PS2 games harder to find. Especially since I'm living in the country Smile

Hi there Lemon
Was wondering if you can post approximate price ranges for components. It would make it easier to decide what to bring when coming into Korea.

Basic thing is that I have my system in Oz, and to sell it would mean to lose a lot... and then re-build one there... is expense again. Stripping it down to parts which one can carry is easy. Suspect cases are not too expensive, and is mice and keyboards... other parts?

Any online shop in English? Have not yet learned hangul yet.

Where is the best place to buy a digital SLR camera?

I'Park Mall at Yongsan station? Or Technomart? I'm looking for a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT/350D...the Canon Japan version, the Kiss N Digital was priced at 550,000w vs the Canon Korea Rebel XT/350D for 700,00w.

Does anyone know about the warranty regarding buying the Kiss N Digital? Would I have to go to Japan if anything were to go wrong with my camera? Or is the warranty transferable to Canon Korea?

Any help would be awesome, thanks guys and gals. Wink

Hi,

Tis been awhile since anyone posted here...I know how to build my computer from absolute scratch, and I would very much like to take advantage of this cheap marketplace. However, I've heard someone quote a 21" LCD noname monitor at costing 350,000 won, which is ridiculous since I can buy an LG 22" widescreen hi-res hi-contrast for a mere 275,000 won. Now, they very well could have been buying it somewhere other than yongsan.

So to sum up, if building from scratch, not requiring any software (can put that on myself) just need an english keyboard and a motherboard running BIOS in english, is it definitively worth my while to build a comp when I get to KOrea, rather than bring a laptop?

Cheers,

Jon
