A lot of my students are always late at my elementary school. The adminstration says its because of schedule problems, but who knows...it seems to be random who is late and when...

I used to start class on time and just repeat myself for the late kids once they showed up. Most times this was frustrating, though, because you know how hard it can be to explain in English to Korean kids what you want them to do, then 5 kids walk in (usually 2 minutes apart) shrugging with no clue what's going on.

My second course of action was to play a game with the early kids until the other kids showed up, maybe review or whatever. However, after months and months of this, I started getting annoyed. Every 2 minutes in walks another kid, opening the door and letting it slam shut in the breeze.

These days I just refuse to start class until at least 90% of the kids show up. This was fine until some parents started complaining I start class late. I'm at a loss. What would you do?

I've got my classes set up in teams based on the seating chart. If one team member shows up late for an activity, it's up to the rest to fill that person in.

The only time I go back and restart a lesson is for something like a spelling test.

During camps my boys were coming in late sometimes up to an hour late. So I told them that after 10 minutes they are marked absent and have to go home unless they notify me in advance.

After that I had no later comers Razz

Wow, that sounds like a reward to me.

I do the same thing. Ten minutes, then you're marked absent (I'm usually lenient on rainy days, though). And it's not much of a reward when a certain number of absences results in a fail.

If my students are one minute late I mark them late and they lose one mark. 30 minutes late is 2 marks, and an hour late is 3 marks (the same as an absence).

I have a hogwan class that has made a point of leaving just as the bell's about to go and coming back 10 minutes later. The boss doesn't care so long as their parents keep paying, so neither do I.

not when the school rings the moms, and the moms give them hell. I had a sobbing first year in apologizing about it at one point.

after 1 minute my students are marked late (-1%). After 15 minutes they are marked absent (-2%).

Also if late students do not see me at the end of the class I don't change their absent to a late. I usually make a reminder call for late students to come and see me, but sometimes everyone rushes out of class as soon as I end the class and then they lose.

Wow, the beav and superhero are hard a$$es! Of course, they probably don't have to teach dim-witted, dense, $hit-for-brains Sports & Dance students like I do. I am unbelievably lenient, and I don't see how a bit of good will (on the part of the teacher - "OK, I'll mark you on time today, but if it happens again, I'll have to mark you late") can go wrong.

Some of my students have 'Bowling' as their major, I $hit you not!
