Wrong answer! The north has one of the largest armies in the world |
But...
1. Their equipment is adequated
2. They suffer from low moral, especially among the lower ranks.
3. They suffer from hunger
And if you read my post carefully, you would have read that there are 4 nuclear subs along each of the coastline of Korea. They are not there for a pleasure cruise.
Once "the balloon goes up", the US and the Allies know that the best strategy would be to totally destroy the Norths governing infrastructure. With mean, Pyongyang would be a dust bowl.
the only reason the US doesn't do anything is because a war with N. Korea would drag China into it. And knowing China, they would purposely attack Taiwan to tie the US' hands. Thus turning it into a regional conflict.
Thats why the US doesn't get involved |

It's not going to happen. US forces are already stretched, 'liberating' Iraq and Afghanistan, and maintaining a presence in several of the other 'stans'. Dubya won't go preemptive on North Korea until he's had his way with Iran, which is where the oil is, and by that time I'll be out of here. The Koreans, north and south, have a lot to answer for, beginning with the Japanese occupation. Let them work it out, themselves. |

You also have to consider Iran. Iran is making a power play and will be involved sooner or later.
Also, other countries, like France, Germany and Syria will try to undermine the US efforts.
Regardless, the real battlefield is the mind. |

I think what the poster means is that Koreans are going to have to get over the occupation. Yes it was traumatic but apologies have been given many times and a lot of money has been paid out in compensation. If you want to move ahead, you can't keep looking backwards. Korea needs to move on and put it in the past.
And as far as any idiot that thinks the North could take Seoul, the chances of that are less likely than North Korea winning the World Cup. How do suppose that the North is going to get over the DMZ, the most heavily militarized zone in the world? Having no extra food or oil to sustain any kind of offensive plus obsolete equipment, not a snowball's chance in hell.
Furthermore a lot of these troops in this 1 million man army are tied up preventing another Incheon from happening. Also many troops are deployed to make sure there aren't food riots because maybe you haven't heard but people are starving up there.
Well trained Homer? Get real. Did you even read my link? North Korean soldiers are more likely to be helping harvest crops then they are actually training. That is, if there are any crops to harvest... |

The truth of the matter is that we could not conventionaly invade North Korea without losing massive amounts of personel. It's the terrain and the fact that they have been building and building defenses for 50 years. The american people would never stand for the amount of casualties we would sustain in that type of war. We could however destroy the NK army if it tried to invade. We would have some major casualties at the beginning and their would be alot of civilian casualties. It would be very ugly but NK has no chance of winning. However, it would be bloody and alot of people would die and cities destroyed. That is why it hasn't happened yet. I could tell you some stuff about both sides that would keep you up at night but their would be no point in it. It's better just to think about it like you think about getting hit by a car. There is nothing you could do about it at the time and its highly unlikely so you just never think about it. |

At the first sign of any major military movement that looks like a possible offensive from the north, the US will use preemptive measures to try and prevent a major confrontation. This of course will not be ignored or it might just humble them. If, for any reason, the south became the agressor, the US, according to their agreement, would let them go it alone. If you note, the south refused to sign the armistice because they did not want to give up fighting. But the UN had said it would be futile and the costs of life on all sides was just too much already. The question I have to ask, and I already know the answer, but still have to ask it because the answer just doesn't cut it for me is: Why in heck did the US ever divide the countries after WWII with Russia? They say it all had to do with sharing the rebuilding costs. What a huge ammount of money we have spent to try and remedy that mistake.
To return to the subject:
This whole mess with the north could be over quickly if it were not for two things (if you think of more that's ok because it's late and I am tired)
1. President Kim is a lunatic and would never give up his dictatorship.
2. How can you save face after 50+ years of bickering? You know, the worst battles are those with family; ie. US Civil War.
As for the assault on Seoul, if it happened, it would be ballistic and not nuclear (let's get real, the fallout would devistate the north as well, at least portions). Japan is the country that needs to worry about a nuclear attack. Also, if the north is a nationalistic as the south, they wouldn't destroy it with nuclear missiles, after all, don't they want all of Korea. Why would you radiate land that you hope to possess and occupy. Japan would be no problem, considering the annexation of Korea over 100 years ago by their (then) imperialistic government. Why do you think the rhetoric with Japan's PM is so strong. He is very concerned. As is China, although they might use this as an opportunity to ally themselves with the north so they could try and take Taiwan.
This would all seriously destabalize the region and we would be out of a job (and if we are lucky, airlifted to the Philippines or Guam, or unlucky and be bomb fodder). |

THe USA need to remember IRAN is a war nation! and they have nothing to loose. but they will never go down without a fight! and when USA wins and goes home IRAN will just rebuild it self through the SANDS of time as it always has! PERSIA was a force and have had more blood shed than USA ever had or ever will..
trying to take IRAN will be costly financially and the human casualties will be HUGE! but at the end of it all. USA WILL FIND BABYLON! with OIL of RICHES!
when will the GREED STOP!!! |

Who is 'they' in "they say..."? In the last days of the war the Soviet Union crossed the border into Japanese-held Korea and were moving south very rapidly. The US proposed dividing the peninsula as an alternative to the Soviets taking all of it. There was no option of ordering the Soviets out. |

I saw one of the evening news shows this morning, I think it was the CBS Evening News (it would be Thursday evening's news in the USA), and they had a big story about how the US is now prepping Guam for the possibility of a military strike on North Korea. |
I'm not that worried about this. N Korea can't even feed itself without massive foriegn aid. And they get the aid by holding the south hostage. Any kind of military action by them would result in sanctions that would mean having the economy grind to a halt. It makes no long term sense for the North to invade.
Of course Kim Jong Illybits is Korean, so long term planning is questionable. He may just wake up to a bad hair day and decide to unleash a sea of fire. But I put that at less than 1%.
Long and the short of it is, N Korea is a parasite, and parasites don't kill their hosts.
ps. If I were KJI, I'd be more worried about the Chinese than the US. |

But anyone in uniform or has information about the war strategy will tell you...North Korea cannot win, either conventionally or nuclearally. |
Wrong answer! The north has one of the largest armies in the world. If the US alone could beat the north...they would have already done it instead of listening to there rhetoric and other nonsense, etc.. If the north strikes first...it is well known by the people in uniform...the area around seoul would be history. Millions and millions would be killed in the first few days of the war in and around seoul. That's a fact. Bridges would be knocked out and millions would be stuck on either side of the river.
Don't kid yourself....the north would win hands down until the allies got together...that would take at least 3-4 weeks before all the troops from around the world landed in korea...in the mean time...the north has killed millions.[/quote]
One of the largest armies in the world? What a farce! We're talking farmers who remain conscripts for years after doing their military service. Of the 1 million troups, only a miniscule amount are battle ready. Nobody says Seoul will not be destroyed, simply that North Korea cannot win a war as it is logistically impossible for them to do so. Simply put, their military hardware is obsolete and they do not have the ressources to fight a war: food for their soldiers, fuel for their tanks and trucks that will bring supplies to their soldiers, replacement parts for their weapons, etc. Besides, do you think the average NK soldier will want to fight upon realizing he's been lied to as he sets foot in SK? |

There is also long range artilley...they could most likely level large portions of Seoul before those guns would be silenced.
NK is not just a bunch of farmer-conscripts. In that society being in the army means you are the Elite of the Elite and hence you have status. They are well motivated and enjoy a very important terrain advantage. This would be a very ugly war.
Guri,
That makes more sense. However, Korea is not alone in not forgiving Japan for its WWII (and pre-WWII) acts. Look to China and Nankin, the Philipines and many other countries/areas that were conquered and occupied by imperial Japan.
The question of the apology seems to be far from resolved in their eyes. |
