You mean, "And don't forget to add in the free housing MOST teachers get." Not all do.

If you think employer-provided housing is "free" you're deluded.
BTW I don't earn that much and don't need to. |

I've looked at Oman and the beginners (meaning 2 years exp or less) usually get about 800-850 Omani Riyals a month, or roughly US $2400. (2.4 mil won.) No word on housing though. Saudi Arabia pays a bit more but it's not known for their hospitality and once you worked in Saudi you're viewed as damaged goods in other middle eastern arab countries because Saudi is like Korea- if you're white and breathing, you have a job. I'm curious about the UAE, Oman and possibly Kuwait, unless the latter destabilizes. |

Come on. If you're not getting free housing with your hagwon you signed a very bad deal. |

Uhhh. In 1.5 years I've never paid rent on my place. So it sure seems free to me. |

DESULTUDE has the best job in the world. And they have figured out how to squeeze 5 months into a single month. SHHH!!! don't tell the evil Korean masters or all of the hagwon guys will be working forever to get out from under that one year contract.
(sorry I know it was a simple typo, but I couldn't resist...) |
Thanks- I needed that! |

It's only free in the financial sense. |

Hagwon koans. There's a good thread in there somewhere. |

I don't.. does that make me a bad person?? What is the point of this thread exactly? If you're not happy with your salary.. quit if you think you can make more somewhere else. |

"Free" housing is part of a package agreed between you and your employer in return for your services be they as an instructor or whatever.
Another common part of packages, as you'll be familiar with, is a round trip air ticket. I suppose according to your logic this is free too.
In no sense of the word is the amount your employer pays toward your housing, or anything else for that matter, "free"... you work in return for payment inclusive of that amount, not exclusive.
I fart in your general direction. |

Dude, I'm not writing an employment contract and foot noting my definitions. Yes, you could negotiate instead of a 2 million won a month package (with a free apartment) a 2.4 million won a month package with no apartment. But who cares about your hair splitting? My point is we get on average 2 mil plus a (rent) free apartment, which you have to work into the over all compensation package when you're comparing a hagwon salary to RR's various salary average posts.
Now, *pat* *pat*, run along. |

I can never figure out why RR compares his degree and job with people who graduated in MUCH MORE DIFFICULT areas requiring Math courses (like Engineering), and often a Masters Degree in Business.
People in those fields make more because there are fewer people who graduate in them. It's more difficult.
With that said, yes, I make a little more than those people do (with extra hours from my school, which I do) and still work fewer hours with Saturdays off. |

He ignores a whole lot of "minor" things. What salary can a 23 year old with an arts BA and no job experience command in North America?
What is the Korean math teacher sitting next to him really pulling down?
What hours are Koreans working compared to the 4.75 hours we clock in a class room on a daily basis? I've seen him biatch that Korean cab drivers make almost as much as a hagwon teacher, never accounting for crazy hours those SOBs work.
Why does he frequently compare a hagwon job to a job within a chaebol? Why doesn't he realize there are different economics afoot for pay scales? The foreign hagwon teacher comes, teaches for a couple years, leaves. That's 90% of the cases. The haggie worker is not here to raise a family. Chaeobols ARE the social safety net and they have to pay their workers more. A Korean worker isn't an island. He has aged parents to take care of, huge education costs for his children, his wife is expected not to work...
Anyone here working at a decent school (that doesn't work you more than your contracted hours without compensation) feel underpaid? |
