Does anyone know, in general, if the online TEFL course is as highly regarded as the more conventional courses ?

cheers

http://www.distance-learning.org/tlac/programs/tlccertif.shtml

Just did their second course. Found it to be interesting, well...... as interesting as studying TEFL can get. Ok I'll admit it It WAS BORING!!

A number of unis offer credit towards Masters degrees for certificate holders. That was the attraction for me, to start a Masters without really starting a Masters.
Glad I did the courses, helped me get a uni job

How long did that one take you, and how many "hours" is it listed as on the certificate. I see many Universities, and now many Public/Private jobs, accepting only certificates with 100 or more hours.

At least the certificate they give you looks like a real one. A lot of places have some really crappy Microsoft Word-looking certificates, and that scares me.

I'll check the certificate later today, from memory there are no hours listed on it.
Each course is 3 months long, and extensions are available.
For each course you are sent 3 text books and a list of questions / tasks for each book. In terms of word count my first Certificate course work came to about 20,000 words, the second about 15,000.

I'll list the text books used later, a few of them were by Rodgers

Thanks AJ.

1. So it took you 3 months? How many hours per day did you spend on it?

2. I looked at the certificate sample and saw no hours listed (yours probably is the same).

3. What is that black spot on the head of the guy in your avatar?

Oh man Spanish inquisition!
My first course I did about 40% of it in a marathon 48 hour session that almost killed me. I had read the books aa couple of times before hand though so I had done a fair bit of thinking prepartion

Second course I spread it out a bit more. Didn't work on it everyday, but I was able to get through it starting a new job and doing another online unit. About 4 or 5 weekends where I put in about 7-8 hours. And bits and pieces during the week.
Apparently it's possible to finish the coursework in under a month, I'd believe that and well technically I guess I did that. (the last month not the first) Possible, but not a whole lot of fun

Here are the books used for the first course:

1) The Language Teaching Matrix by Jack Richards
2) Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching by Richards and Rodgers (one of those guys designed the coursework for the certs, forget which..it's on their website somewhere)
3) Teaching The Spoken Language by Gillian Brown

Advanced Course:
1) Syllabus Design by David Nunnan
2) Speaking By Martin Bygate
3) Reflective Teaching in 2nd Language Classrooms by Jack Richards

The books are included in the price

Its a "H" for hologram because he's a hologram. A dead guy brought back to life to keep Lister (the last surving human) company aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf. Its a British cult comedy sci-fi show, normally I don't like cults, but those guys are ok.

What's all that gunk coming from the mouth of the chick in your avatar?
