I've never intentionally gone to one, but I've run into them here and there...got yelled at and quickly took my leave. And don't think that "I'm Canadian" is gonna get you out of it...we all look the same...apparently.

I walked past a small pro north demo in Hongdae and they were actually quite friendly and even gave me a ridiculous leaflet in Korean taht I couldn't read. I tried to get my gf to translate and she was too embarrased to and just said they're a bunch of morons.

I know this is abit off-topic, but we are talking about protests here...

Does anyone remember Kent State?
Do you think that can happen again in the US?

And this is my take on the subject;

Yeah, Koreans have the right to protest. There is mistake about that. But why protest in favor of a violant dictator who deprives his own people of freedom.
Alot of these protests are organized by Pro-north korean organizations.

You know, if the north did take over, you wouldn't see anymore protests. I think the north would squash it like there's no tomorrow, making the Tiannamen massacre seem like a walk in a park

Didn't Kent State result from the particular circumstances on that particular day? My impression is that the troops themselves started firing on their own volition, they weren't ordered to do do by higher powers. In fact, if I've got my story straight, their commander shouted at them to stop as soon as they started firing.

If that is indeed what happened, then yes, I'm sure something similar could happen again in the US, or anywhere else for that matter.

How about a whole gang of us throw on some "I Heart NY" t's, throw some Toby Keith in the boombox and moonwalk our way on down there to show our support for the kids? I'm sure they'd have a sense of humor about the whole thing.

This is interesting....

Once while teaching at a hogwon, I knew this high school girl that went to every candle light vigil in 2002.
Then we discussed what we were doing for the coming year (2003) and she said "I'm going to study in California"

Confused ....I thought and then I just said it, "Why do you want to study in a country that you're protesting against?"

Her response...."Well, I met this cute guy who became my boyfriend and he persuaded me to go....plus all my friends go too...so why not, right?"

again, Confused

Then we get into the mentality "If your friends all collectively jumped into the Han River, would you be obliged to jump in after them?"

Y'know, if you had to like a country to live in it. Then 90% of us would be on the first plane home.

Ain't that the truth!

I always tell people these days-- I might be American, but only by birth

But I do have some patriotic feels in me

May I assume then that you have surrendered your U.S. passport, or does that fall within the "patriotic feels" part?

How about a "*beep* Bush/*beep* " sign? That would confuse the hell out of them. "Guys, should we kick his ass or ask him to join us for lunch at Outback?".

Anybody ever been to these protests? Is it something you could check out without taking a totally jackassed personal risk?

"Ever been to them"?? In Jongno???!! Shocked ... Can't be serious.
Billy, mass rallies & free-floating anti-foreigner angst go with life in central Seoul like the friggin' kimchee with the rice, man.

Personal risk? Usually little to none. But there are always those rare occasions when everything seemed copacetic, and then suddenly I realise what a bad idea it was to show up. Not so bad if I'm on the cycle and can make a hasty getaway. On foot, it can be tricky. You just have to remember never to let any one of them get the drop on you. My approach is to walk quickly but confidently away, sucker-punching the banner-bearers as I leave the scene.

if they want the Army out, I think that is a wonderful idea. The US Army gives the soldiers and extra-300.00 to 400.00 a month to remain here. I honestly think that we have alternatives-we do not need to be here.

I know 7 students in my university that are going to the States as an exchange student and they are all starry eyed about it. Some will find that our students protest as well and against the US government.

I do not care if they protest, have at it!!!!
Honestly, protesting is so common thatand the voice of protest so constant that it is all white noise anymore.
