I don't understand why some people won't admit to it, but the people of Canada and the US have a lot more in common than they have differences. I'm not speaking about the governments...just the people. We have a very similar sense of humor, we like a lot of the same recreational activities, and we generally get along just great when politics aren't involved. We like a lot of the same products, and we have a mutually beneficial relationship in terms of culture and manufacturing.

I've been to Canada several times and have loved every minute of it. I think Strange Brew is one of the most hilarious movies I've ever seen. That's just to name a few examples that relate to me personally. Only with the advent of the recent geopolitical situation and George Bush has there been the kind of friction that now seems commonplace. Sure, there are some things that separate the two cultures, but really, we're both North Americans at the end of the day.

I think thin-skinned Americans get tired of the anti-Americanism that is prevalent around the world today. People lash out when they feel like they're being attacked for reasons that are not personal but rather generalizations and politics. Most Americans love Canadians, and vice versa. Forget the politics and have a beer together!

I admit it. I generally refer to Canada as America-lite.

I would like to take a quote from the famous folk band from Canada the Arrogant Worms:

"It isnt that we're much better
its just that we're less worse!"

I never really knew that many Canadians until I came overseas. Ha Canadians friends in Hong Kong and met some great people from Canada since being in Korea. I find that Canadians from the East quite different than are those from the West, in fact I heard Canadians from the Maritimes thate that they had more in common with the New England states than they did with the rest of Canada.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard Americans say they came to Korea with this attitude. Then they say that they get far more anti-Americanism from Canadians than from Koreans. If you've been around the board for awhile, you'll know that Americans think Ilsanman's quote thingie is backwards. There is a real irony to the title of this thread.

Admittedly, I haven't met any Canadians in Korea. Actually, I haven't met any foreigners here, other than an American from the Gunsan Air Base that was a very friendly guy.

I haven't really sought any foreigners out, mostly because of the things I've read on this board. I went to the foreigner hangout here in my little city and I wasn't impressed.

Like the sampling of Americans in Korea, I would expect that the sampling of Canadians in Korea probably wouldn't be indicative of the actual attitudes of the majority of Canadians. Even if I meet a raving mob of lunatic anti-American Canadians, I'll write it off. I've met enough Canadians in the States and been to Canada enough times to know the actual attitudes.

One caveat: French Canadians are exempt from my friendliness. I hate to say it, but the only thing worse for an American in terms of attitude than a Parisian is a Quebecois. The reason for this (I think) is the abhorrence of N. American culture and a predisposition to be a francophiliac (i.e. "If France hates America, I do too!")

That's funny. A sampling of Canadians isn't indicative, but a sampling of Quebecois is? Troll! And to say that Quebecois hate America because France does, well, it just shows how much time this poster has spent in Quebec.

France hasn't controlled Quebec since the 18th century. A lot of Quebecois felt abondoned by the French after the loss of New France, at least that is the cliche. Quebec is Quebec and if they hate America it's for their own reasons. Quebec borders on the US, France is across an ocean. Quebec was never invaded by anyone (except les salles anglos) during WWII, France was liberated/occupied by American troops. Their relationships with America are entirely different. That's like me saying that you must like mushy peas with your fish and chips because you speak English.

Uh, you're free to refute what I say, but just because I say something you don't like do I suddenly become a troll. That word is way overused here. I suggest you check up on your internet lingo before you go off telling every poster with an opinion that he or she is a troll.

You're right, I've spent absolutely zero time in Quebec. The reason? Every French Canadian (read French Canadian, not resident of Quebec) I've ever encountered has rubbed me the wrong way. I'm well aware that there is a significant population in Quebec that are not French Canadian. But hey, if the shoe fits...

Good point. However I don't think food is an important part of culture as language is - and I'm simply stating that there is a relationship between language and world view. The US and the UK are and have been solid allies for a long time. Don't you think that is in part due to a language similarity? Birds of a feather tend to flock together, as the idiom goes...

When you contradict yourself in the same post - that's trolling. Plus, calling you a troll is way better than what I really want to call you. Like you said, if the shoe fits... You obviously don't realize you were contradicting yourself, so I'll let you continue to believe that Quebecois and French are one in the same. Are you from North America or the UK? Oh wait a minute, I forgot, according to your logic, they are one in the same.

I guess I mislabeled French Canadians as Quebecois. I feel I clarified myself with the context of my post. If you want to argue semantics such as ethnic labeling mistakes (later clarified, then called a contradiction), and call me names, that's fine. Why don't you criticize my grammer too, if you can? Just go ahead and completely ignore my point, call me a troll, and get on with your life.

I stand by my original statement, with the term "French Canadian" inserted for "Quebecois." Happy?

Ok, it's 'grammar', not 'grammer'. I may be from Quebec, but at least I can spell the word, not to mention teach it.
Very Happy
