Or restricted to industrial uses only (such as cleaning mold off walls), do you suppose that it might play a small part in rendering Koreans less objectionable, not to say reviled, in virtually every country but the one in which they live? It seems that this turpentine that they guzzle turns an otherwise harmless individual into one component of a raving mob. With uni students in particular, the stuff is so cheap, that for two bucks it's possible to get thoroughly screwed up, especially the girls. I guess that's where the 'Everyday New Hymen' guys kick in. Offhand, I can't think of any other advanced, or advancing, country, that offers up such cheap swill that's guaranteed to subdue its citizens so. Oh, maybe Orwell had it right in '1984'. They do soju in North Korea as well. It might as well be gin.

....the consumption of other alcoholic beverages would rise dramatically Very Happy

...and the people who couldn't afford it, they would riot like Koreans have never rioted before.

What if they properly taxed the damn stuff? Forget that the stuff is rotgut-- there's something wrong with the fact it's cheaper than beer, yet has 4-5 times the alcohol content. Raising the price to a couple of thousand won a bottle might help reduce the number of alcoholics in this country.

Well said! Why should the poor have such easy access to chemicals that will numb the pain? Let's raise the taxes to protect the poor from themselves! I mean, if people are going to drink they should be able to afford the W100,000 for a bottle of whiskey. Excuse me. I'm on the way to the bank to wire my W1 million to my savings account back home and then go teach my 4 hours for the day.

Sure, and while we're at it, why not remove all taxes on cigarettes. Who cares if it costs thousand upon thousand of dollars to treat cancer patient? Poor people should have the right to destroy their body, too.

I have heard that the leading cause of death for 40 year old Korean males is Liver cancer. By all means keep the price of soju dirt cheap. *sigh*

Yata boy, you have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt what a total moron you are. Alcohol is not a solution to any problem. It just makes things worse. Same with cigarettes.

Of course apologists like bobbyhanlon see this as a personal attack on Koreans. Maybe you could change your point of view a little. Maybe I actually give a d@mn about Koreans and want the best for them. That includes less alcoholism and less liver cancer. If I stopped giving a d@mn and didn't care then their would be a problem in my opinion.

You apologists are pathetic. By raising the price of cigarettes less people are now smoking. I heard that 53% of adult male Koreans are now smoking compared to 57% before the price hike. That is a step in the right direction. The problem I guess with soju is that people will just drink another alcoholic drink. So that is a problem.
The solution as I see it is to simply encourage people to drink less. Encourage people to exercise more and drink less. However in this country that will go over like a lead balloon...
