Ok, it's 'grammar', not 'grammer'. I may be from Quebec, but at least I can spell the word, not to mention teach it.

I think I can clear up the answer to the title of this thread insofar as Americans are concerned. (The Brits, Kiwis and Aussies will have to speak for themselves.) It comes from the joke thread. Thank Mr. Hanson for submitting it:

It's a cute joke and well illustrates the attitude and behavior of the twit element of the Canadian ESLers. Hence, at least some Americans see the thread title as ironic. A lot of people understand that you reap what you sow. |

| Since coming to Boston in January, whenever I tell people that I'm actually Canadian 6 out of 10 will say "Oh I'm sorry". The other 4 say "I have a friend in Montreal...." |

I still love that joke!
Seriously, it's just a joke, and if you can't laugh at yourself (or at your nationality), you're taking it much too seriously.
Example: A Vancouverite, a Newfie (person from newfoundland), and a Quebecer find a genie lamp, rub it and a genie comes out, giving them each a wish.
The Vancouverite wishes to have a million $ and presto! He's a millionaire. The Quebecer wishes for Quebec to have a 5-foot tall wall built around Quebec, isolating it from the rest of North America. The Newfie then wishes for Quebec (with its wall surrounding it) to be filled with water.
That's a great joke. Granted I didn't do it justice here, but suffice it to say that I'm from Quebec and I don't mind these kind of jokes. That's all it is, a joke. Taking jokes like these seriously is just insecure. |

Hey, if they're going to yank Ilsanman's How have things improved? (still puzzled about that) then why don't they kill this dumb thread? It's not strayed off topic or gotten horribly nasty, and who knows -- it may even have educated somebody somehow. But I don't care. The fact is, I'm tired of seeing this drag on for 9 pages as though it's Freakiest Waygook or something worthwhile.
Mods, please. Now isn't the time to think or deliberate on the whys & wherefores. Just lock this so it doesn't keep showing up on my View your posts searches.  |
