Thought I would check out the site today, wow, not too many creative posts, in fact 98 percent were pretty dry.

Here is a topic, how do you see each country? I mean really? I was thinking about this recently and have put my finger on some pretty accurate vignettas:

First off............the U.S. I once heard the U.S described an adolescent with really big arms. This totally fits. He is pretty arrogant, wants to be the big guy on the block, and usually just pays attention only to himself. He is not "too" smart, reckless, wild, and impulsive. Yes, I believe this fits. What about Korea? Well, let me go down the line. Canada, would be, kind of like a really fat woman who lives next to the adolescent. She is kind of a nerd, but you can trust her. She is always having parties and inviting a bunch of losers, and all she does is talk about her neighbor who is always driving his car too fast or doing this or doing that. Now, the fat lady really, deep down, admires the young fellow. She wishes he would pay more attention to her, but she knows he thinks she is not too cool, and so she just yells at him all the time. Now she does have a pretty good sense of what is going on in the world. She can speak French, and she is a good person, and she is safe, because as long as the adolescent is next door, he can pretty much protect her because he is strong.

Now, England is sort of like a 50 year old gentleman boxer. He is really polite, cool to hang around, and he is pretty wise as well. He is not as strong as the adolescent, but he can still pack a punch. The adolescent and him go out drinking, and they enjoy each others stories, and they both complain about the rich arrogant woman who lives next door.........France. Now France is a woman who is in her 50's, she is a great cook, a very creative person, full of rich heritage, and she still looks pretty attractive at times, BUT, she is always complaining. Kind of like the fat lady. She too loves the adolescent, but she really hates his stupidity, and sometimes she wishes she were younger so that she could become romantic with him. But she is not too cool for him.
Now, Japan is like a Samari warrior with a broken sword. He is still young, and strong, but lacks the power he once had. He has a rich history, and can one day get his sword back.

Russia is like an old drunk guy who fell down and had too much to drink. He was once a great fighter as well, but recently he has just been sitting on the sidewalk, trying to figure out what went wrong. He remembers that he used to be one of the big guys on the block, and he is trying to get his mind together to become powerful again.

Korea is like a man with a big head and a big mouth that is in a wheel chair. The other countries have helped him so much, and now he has one strong arm. He is always yelling about his accomplishments because he feels insecure about being so weak. The adolescent has helped him some, but the man is never satisfied and is always yelling yelling and yelling. He wants to be cool, and his dream is to be recognized by everyone as being part of the "cool" people.

China is like an older Giant of a man that has a learning problem. He is HUGE but cannot really function yet. He has muscles, but does not know how to use them. He is starting to get things together, and he dreams of one day being the champ. Each day he is training and losing his awkwardness. And this has the adolescent and the Samari's attention.

Ha ha ha ha Very Happy Very Happy Cool

I see England as old fat lady who lost all of her sons, one being the adolescent. Her neighbors are not as friendly to her anymore but the adolescent is being super nice to her. She often thinks about the past and wonders where it all went wrong.

That is interesting, I noticed on the t.v recently that Austrailia wanted the Union Jack removed from their flag. How do Austrailians feel about England?

I can't speak for all Australians but despite all the banter, rivalry, jokes and attitude we sometimes display towards England and the English. Deep down we respect and admire England, and are fond of many English things; we are not always willing to freely admit this. I believe this is changing somewhat as Australia becomes older, wiser and more sophisticated, and less insecure.

Up until WWII, when the vast majority of Australians (over 97%) were of British &/or Irish descent, most people declared their loyalty to Britain and declared themselves 'British' subjects, despite Australia being an independent nation for nearly 50 years at that point! Australians then, were largely more than willing to help the 'mother' land and often saw British interests as Australian interests.

This attitude changed somewhat after the war significantly due to the war and fears of invasions due to our location (at the time, the common thought was that an Asian country [Indonesia] would invade Australia at any minuute), hence the huge post WWII immigration drive, this coupled with increased American influence through TV and movies, steered Australia further from Britain. This has only increased in the last 25 years as Australia has actively pursued closer economic and cultural ties with their neighbours in Asia, and experienced large scale Asian migration.

Australia has often acted (and still does to a degree) like an adolescent, especially in regards to Britain (principally England). People will always joke about the British (mainly the English) and sometimes make unfavorable comments towards Britain, but deep down have always admired Britain.

Most younger Australians now see no need to keep the ties as close as they were with Britain and hope to be a Republic with a new flag, though it probably won't have for another 15-20 years as older Australians still don't have the belief or confidence that Australia can be a Republic.

The reality is now that Britain and Australia are half a world apart, on different continents and operating in different spheres; Australia in Asia-Pacific, Britain in Europe. Now days around 30-40% of Australians have no British and/or Irish ancestry at all, and with the vast majority of new migrants being Asian, this will figure with only increase and as a result Australia will work focus ever more closely on Asia which is logical given our location.

To a large degree, the only real thing that really binds Australia and Britain these days is history and a somewhat similar (though increasingly different) shared culture. Australia will always deep down respect Britain, though may reluctantly if ever admit it.

P.S. I hope Australia changes its flag soon (removing the Union Jack) and becomes a Republic. I like and admire Britain, though also don't mind engaing in a bit of banter with British friends! Wink

In the spirit of the thread ...

Australia is a c o c k y, loud-mouthed, not too bright athletic teenage jock who runs around and boasts of his sporting achievements especially over ol' Mum Great Britain and younger brother, New Zealand.

He's attractive, quite rich and athletic but doesn't have too much brains and lives out in the boonies, with others not paying too attention to him. Though, he's always hoping someone out there will eventually notice his achievements and take him seriously.

New Zealand is simply innocent.

So new to the world with only 150 odd years of history... so small and independent... a little naive at times... and yes, as a 'younger brother' of Australia, always in his shadow to the rest of the world. Maybe not as sporty as Aussie, but certainly more intelligent!! Wink

A little humour in that last part aussies, in a country so far from our own, I certainly consider you all my brothers (or sisters)!!![/b]

At my university I lived down the hall from two guys from Australia. These guys were hilarious, always cool to hang out with, I remember one of them had a huge party the night after his "100th" American girl!
