Yeah, thinking about it. But I'm staying in Korea, so it may come down to a situation of planning to work at another school, re-signing with my current school, grabbing the bonus, and doing the visa run for the other school.

Anyway, from what I'm told (and have read on here many times) the director doesn't have a say in whether he gives it to me, as it's law either way. So I'm *hoping* this will all be moot.

Pyongshin: definition open to varying interpretations but I meant seeing a Korean regularly in a romantic sense, dinners, gifts and rompy pompy included.
Sickboy: I don't think all the Americans and Canadians on here understand Strine. Fortunately i spent 2 years in Oz so I know what "rooting" is.

6,7,9 don't apply to me. I think. But there are other unmentioned criteria. Been on 5 visa runs to Japan ain't bad, for example. Have also lived on 200,000 won or less for a month or more, on more than one occasion, without borrowing.

Yep, yep, yep, and yep. Re: #1, one of my favourite moments was telling my boss in Halifax, "I'm leaving."-- Why?-- "I'm going to Korea."-- When? -- "This Thursday. I found out last night."

Quote:
5) served your time propping up the bars in itaewon.

Not so much Itaewon, and not so often, but the money I had stolen from my credit card in one of the clubs would have "propped them up" for quite a little while. Most of my beer budget was spent in Changwon.

6)Opened yourself to rejection by trying to befriend all the other waygooks in your town.

Dunno. I can't decide whether I was social or antisocial. I was always up to meeting new foreigners, and met quite a few great ones, but didn't go out of my way to do so on a regular basis.

Quote:
7)Threatened to leave your school in order to get things your way.

Is there any other way? Yep.

Quote:
8)Had an angry out of control incident with a Korean

Had a manager one time, that became infatuated with the female foreign teacher at our school in the sticks. I got along quite well with her, platonically since we were both dating other people... but he got so jealous he called me up at 4am and threatened to kill me. He didn't, but does that still count?

I refuse any hands on contact without a biosuit and respirator.

10)Actually left Seoul for a countryside trip.

Lots of times. Yep.

11) spent the whole night in a hongdae nightclub.

Not to my recollection, (which doesn't really mean no). As far as I can tell from the papertrails of receipts and beer labels, my sunrises usually came in Itaewon and Shincheon... although I closed a lot more bars in Kyungsangnamdo than I ever did in Seoul.

Wait, there was one time after a Dave's getogether that went quite a while. I can't remember if it was sunrise when I left or not though, and it wasn't a 'nightclub' per se. Bobster, Eamo, and Crazy Lemon Girl were there. Ask them?

Are you experienced??!!! If you pass my criteria for a korean ESL teacher, I may just consider you worthy of reading your posts:(only joking). But by my standards you have earned your stripes in korea if you have:-

1)Arrived at short notice on this strange planet with little money and knowing nobody, or what lay ahead.

had a little bit of a primer from friends

2)Been the only foreigner in your hagwon

not yet

3)Worked without a syllabus or planning (the in at the deep end shock)

yeah. at a school that boasted of its "total immersion curriculum". sounds like me when i BS on report cards now.

4)Dated a korean girl or guy.

yup

5) served your time propping up the bars in itaewon.

groan... yup

6)Opened yourself to rejection by trying to befriend all the other waygooks in your town.

actually this pursuit has given me one startling revelation - americans are, more often than not, nicer, more interesting, better educated and less snobbish than canadians.

7)Threatened to leave your school in order to get things your way.

yup

8)Had an angry out of control incident with a Korean

yup

9)Become a master at pro wrestling moves on kids.

yup

10)Actually left Seoul for a countryside trip.

yup

11) spent the whole night in a hongdae nightclub.

yup but only on my birthday

1) I signed the first contract I saw on the internet and even had some anonymous dude call me and warn me about coming to Korea.....does that count as having a brain of oatmeal consistency?

2) I was the only foreigner at my last hagwon. The hagwon went down the sh*t tube and I'm missing 2 million won.

3) No syllabus...I don't think they even have a Korean word for "syllabus." I do plan my classes though because of the lack of the word "syllabus" in a common household Korean dictionary.

4) Married my Korean honeybunny, but I as sure as hell don't call him "oppa"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5) Itaewon...guilty as charged. But I go there for the scrumptous Indian cuisine and good live music at Woodstock. I don't go there for the G.I's hands on my a**.

6) I don't have a large sample of friends. I'm the quiet, mysterious type Cool But I did go on a couple of "blind" outings with some of the posters on this board.

7) Naw.....the hagwon closed down and the director fled to China with my money before I had the chance to threaten with leaving.

Cool Called a Korean girl a "ݷ"(sl*t) for pushing me in a hongdae night club. Sweared at ajeoshis for asking me how much I was. Almost got yanked out of a moving car when my husband got in a fight with a taxi driver. Do these count?

9) I had to remove myself out a kiddie hagwons because I started loving carrying a stick, which had my name on it.

10) I love travelling around Korea. I especially love going to the national parks and drinking too much makkalee. Even went to Ulleung-do, which most Koreans have never travelled to. But now I live in Cheongju and find myself making too many trips to Seoul.

11) Yes...spent the whole night in hongdae...usually against my will. The bars are good, but I hate dancing among all those floppy, sweating dancer in the hip-hop clubs...but my other forein friends love it for some mysterious/astounding reason. Hongdae dance nightclubs suck.

Did I pass?

Quote:

Arrived on a Sat. night and had to teach at 6:30 Monday morning. Didn't see the textbook till 6:15. Second time, arrived with about W200,000 for the month.

2)Been the only foreigner in your hagwon

Quote:

Twice, but neither one was a hakwon. Once for 10 months (pure heck) and once for 4 years. Great experience.

3)Worked without a syllabus or planning (the in at the deep end shock)
Quote:

At the non-hakwon where I worked for 4 years. Loved planning the whole shooing match.

4)Dated a korean girl or guy.
Quote:

Yes, but no details for public consumption.

5) served your time propping up the bars in itaewon.
Quote:

Not in Itaewon, but in Koong-Dong when it was one of only 4 or 5 'free economic zones' in the country that was allowed to stay open all night.

6)Opened yourself to rejection by trying to befriend all the other waygooks in your town.

Quote:

I wouldn't say I tried to befriend anyone, but always tried to be open to friendship if the opposite number didn't strike me as a potential serial killer.

7)Threatened to leave your school in order to get things your way.
Quote:

Not really. I just quit when it was obvious 2 of my four jobs were going to heck in a handbasket.

8)Had an angry out of control incident with a Korean
Quote:

Only once I think. Maybe I've repressed the other ones?

9)Become a master at pro wrestling moves on kids.
Quote:

No. Never taught little kids. I did however throw a middle school kid's books in the hall and push him out the door after them. Very Happy

10)Actually left Seoul for a countryside trip.
Quote:

Only lived in Seoul for 1 year, so coming to Seoul from outside was the big adventure for me. It took me several trips to figure out I had to remember the subway exit number. Otherwise I'd often come out of the subway headed in the wrong direction. Highly confusing to a country boy like me.

11) spent the whole night in a hongdae nightclub.
Quote:

For the year I lived in Seoul I lived in Hongdae, but it wasn't Hongdae yet. But I have seen the sun come up in Koong-Dong and a few other places.

I only got 4...
Mind you, I never lived in Seoul and didn't even go there once in my first year. I did spend all night in some bars in Daejon, but only went out drinking a hand full of times...but the times I went, I went hard.
I seem to have really lucked out with the hagwons I worked at and never had run-ins with won-jongs or K-teachers at all.
I never dated a Korean cuz I met and starting dating a waygookin (whom I eventually married) a couple months in.

After 10 years I'm still missing 5,6,7,10 and 11. However, that's mostly because wild yaks couldn't drag me to Seoul unless I need a new passport.
