so today taxi fares have gone up 20%, doesn't that seem like a big hike to you? i thought that they just went up recently. i mean, i know that fares were low before, but 20% is a lot.
guess i'll be taking the stupid bus more often. |

It was 3 or 4 years ago the basic fare went from 1300 to 1600. So perhaps 20% since then is not so bad.
In the same time, oil has doubled in price.
Plus, of course, other reasons. |

1,600 won was pretty darn low to start. Given the rising price of oil, it's amazing the flag fall hasn't changed in 2 years (or more). A cab ride here is still a bargain compared to any other city of 10 million people. I don't mind paying more. I rarely take rides beyond the 1,600 won minimum. And I always give the cabbie 2,000 and say keep the change. He'll just get a smaller tip I guess. |

it's not just the starting fare, it's eveything, so if your taxi was going to be 10,000 now it's 12,000, 20,000 is 24,000, so on and so forth. |

Yes, we understand what a 20% increase means. |

It is only in Seoul at the moment....
It has yet to rise in other cities......
But it won't take long I pressume....I still paid 1500 won for my taxi today. |

Used cars are dirt cheap. But - gas prices here - are steep! But very worth having a car here.
Having a car though is a real treat. So much easier to get around. Gets you out of the daily push and shove of subways and streets.
It's a quality of life issue. . . |

It increased in this city a month or so back. After the meter hits 2,100 it jumps to 2,500 on all taxis. |

True.
But the price (broadly tracking that of crude) has (edit: close to) tripled over the same period.

I firmly believe that schools in Korea, public or private, will immediately raise teacher salaries to compensate for the increased cost of taxis.
Then again, I am a very positive person. |

It's still pretty darn cheap considering the size and population of Seoul coupled with the oil prices. Last year back home in Sydney, it seems it's $A3 (2700) the moment you step in the cab, and within 5 minutes already close to or above $10 (9,000). The meter back home, if I remember correctly is calculated by distance traveled and duration, so even in the middle of the night after a big night out, the fare can be nudging $40 (35,000) for a 20 minute ride.
Fare hikes always suck, but still the fare ain't that much compared to virtually every other OECD country. |
