I am getting so tired of these comments. I am a size small back home...med-large here....and my students couldn't believe this.

They roared with laughter and made fun of me...basically implied that I am a tank(which I am not). I have curves....but I am not overweight.

I am just so tired of this crap! How do you deal with this and not let it get to you?

Yes I am told that I am fat... the thing is, its true!

The wierdest thing though is that the kids havent said a thing... its the teachers wha are making all the comments. Maybe the kids tease me in Korean...? I dont care, I cant understand it - no love lost there.

(I think they're more interested in my tongue ring!)

Do you think you are fat? Why is it getting to you? This is a culture that sees nothing rude about pointing out "flaws" as well as giving sometimes embarassing compliments. Especially if it is coming from the kids, just brush it off. A bit harder to do when coming from the adults, but still in comparison to most Korean women here, most of us are "fat" (even the men). Back home I'm tall and thin, here I'm a giant with a bit more curves than the average Korean woman.

I get told that all the time... of course it's true, so I who can blame 'em. Wink

But, as clg said, they're also very quick to notice when you've lost weight or made other good changes (hairstyle, make-up, whatever). So, unless it's Friday afternoon (when I'm always so tired and grouchy I'm ready to go postal anyway), it doesn't bother me anymore.

Yes, it's much better to be the guy here. Everyone expects your apartment will be messy, and the cure for all your troubles is a wife. Why do you eat out so much? You need a wife! Laughing

Tzechuk...I can relate. I heard that Korean men often "joke" to their girlfriends/wives about being fat (even when they are slim and gorgeous). Your husband is probably joking, because I met you and you are DEFINITELY not fat...you're a cutie! But my husband tells me the same thing about me being HUUUUGE and I get p*ssed.

I was out to eat with the Korean teachers at my school and two incredibly thin women yelled across the table to ask me how I manage to stay so thin. I told them I just eat right and exercise, but that honestly they are so skinny I should be asking them for advice. At that comment, everyone at the table laughed like I was joking, but the women were sooo thin. I pity women in Korea, unless they have extreme self confidence.

Not me. I'd be glad to put a few pounds on. My co-workers are always telling me that I should gain weight. They have no idea how hard that is to do here when you're hypoglycemic. I told them, "Ask your school to start serving more MEAT and we've got a deal." Wink

You have problems finding meat to eat in Korea?
I'm sure that more than one of the boys in the room would volunteer to take you out for Korean bar-b-que 5 nights a week...mmmm...barbeque. The best part of Korea.

Unless of course you are muslim or jewish. Then the whole barbeque thing has obvious problems. A couple of my students went to Korea on a school trip to tour the LG and SAMSUNG plants. They nearly starved to death. The things they we "allowed" to eat they didn't like and the things they "wanted" to eat had pork(HARAM) in them or prepared with the same equipment. I was showing her pictures and she saw the kimbap and asked where THAT was when she was starving to death. I explained what was in it besides the rice, egg, (pickly thing). (the ham) She laughed a lot.

I dont have problems finding meat to eat in Korea. It's just at my school most of meals they serve are predominantly vegetables and rice type things. Seaweed soup doesn't exactly help in packing on the pounds. And if anyone wants BBQ for dinner, let's go Wink But I work public school, so usually nobody is around at dinnertime(s) (i eat all day), so I just eat alone.

But today, the kids were asking about my clothes(I think they liked my outfit).

So they asked where I bought my stuff, I say Canada.

They ask if I buy clothes here and I say not really, b/c they are too SMALL. This is when the laughter begins. I tell them it is because of my height mainly and also bust size(but I didn't say the latter).

Then coteacher(male) jumps in and says what size do you wear in Canada? I say SMALL...and the whole class in roaring. He then says in Korea, you must be EXTRA LARGEE, hahahahaha. I say no actually I can fit in Med/Large here.....

This after all week, kids have been complimenting me....what gives? I mean I already feel giant looking at fashion mags and being around stick figure Koreans....and then I get this?!??!?!?!?!

Like others have said Koreans tend to be very forward about apperance, and comment on things that might be taboo in the west to talk about to your face.

A common nickname for a couple of my students is dae bo (big head). Lose weight, gain weight, change your hairstyle, make up, wear an outfit they haven't seen. You always get a comment (positive or negative) just part of the culture here. Write the negative stuff off as cultural differences and take the postive stuff to heart Very Happy

Fourtantly I had my students well trained so they know better than to say anything bad about my apperance. Of course the fact that 'my english teacher is very beauitul' is a candy phrase helps ( but there is still a chorus of coughs, and 'sorry's in there.

I can relate, PollyPlummer. When I ate food at my high school last year, I just resorted to bagging my own lunch because I hated their food (always fish with eyeballs, squid, or octopus). I'll have BBQ with you sometime. That's my weakness though...Korean BBQ....I love how meat is prepared here and it tastes great. In the States, it was easy for me to be vegetarian because I don't like American steak or hamburgers. But in Korea, it's impossible for me to be vegetarian because I love the BBQ's so much.
