This letter to an advice columnist reminded me of so many posts and stories I've seen here, particularly to do with young men swooping in from the West wishing to rescue their Oriental beloved from crushing workloads and overbearing families.

What do you think of the letter? It strikes me as quite culturally blind and insensitive, but probably sincere. |

i couldn't get it to work. why don't you just cut and paste the article on here?
what strikes me as funny is that the title and beginning of the letter is so lame, but someone expects that it's a teaser worthy of having people pay to join the club. |

I was able to read it. It was an interesting story. I did not see it as anything other than a guy in a love dilemma. The tone of the letter is not one of a young man swooping in from the the west saving his Asian beloved. I think you assume that simply because his girlfirend is poor that he, being from the West, sees himself as a savior. I am not sure he does feel that way. Sounds to me like he does not want to get bound into a marriage, but it pains him to see his beloved working so hard, and marriage seems the only way to remove her from this situation. |
