2006?
Impossible to say right now....really, impossible.
Dual-core AMD64s, "Cell" CPUs, DDR3 system memory, RDRAM (yellowstone) systems, ATIs version of SLI, or SLI, SATA2....all these things are coming....and then some.
When talking about tech, one can only put together a speculative system and even then, it may not pan out.
Tomorrow never comes..... |

I predict that by 2006, computers will be twice as powerful, and a thousand times bigger, and only the 5 richest men in the world will be able to afford them. |

reality is. you dont need that much power..
simple p4 or centrino processor
4gig speed would be sweet
2GIG RAM
1 x 250 gig drive
1x 500 gig drive
spend 500 bucks on a graphic card
and 500 bucks on a sound card!
and your good to go for another 4 years! |

Prove it.
This ought to be funny.....seeing as there are no P4 4GHz chips. Even funnier as "AMD64" is meaningless if we are talking speed.
Too much power? Well, I suppose you drive a single-stroke Lada, seeing as everything else is too much power.
Ugh...too much power. I'm afraid in the world of CPUs, there can not be too much power. A faster chip will always do everything faster....thus, efficiency, thus better.
Technology always improves and this includes doing current tasks better. Yes, I am talking seconds here, but you canot deny that even a second is time, and a second saved, is time saved. |

I've got a Lada (500 MHz Mac) a Sonata (2.6 GHz Pentium) and a new SM5 (AMD +3200 2.0 GHz). While the Lada reads and writes slower, it saves a lot of time by avoiding installing/uninstalling/rebooting. The SM5 feels faster than the Sonata and it doesn't overheat. All three handle rush hour traffic much like a Ferrari. |

the thing is, computers are like cars; more power is good on a primevil level. It doesn't matter if its miliseconds in processing or milimeters in a drag race, the bigger, badder, stronger device is simply...cooler. If you disagree, please check your *beep* at the door on the way out. |
