Not many Koreans wear sunglasses, and even the ones who do, wear those pale, see-through ones.
I believe it all has to do with the Korean cultural ethos of nunchi, "eye measure." That is, being able to sense another person's kibun, or mood\state of mind.
If you can't see someone's eyes, it's hard to get a good nunchi on a person.
So, hiding your eyes behind sunglasses is the height of rudness in Korea. |
..but hiding your whole face behind a big black ajumma visor is okay? |

I was told directly by a young Korean teacher, while I was squinting into the sun and complaining that I'd forgotten my sunglasses, "Oh, no, sunglasses - VERY low class".
Yeah, the riot-police face shields that the adjumas wear are just so much more 'high class' |

My Korean friend claims it's because we whitey's with our blue and green eyes are more bothered by bright light.
Dark eyes have an inbuilt protection to light. Apparently....... |

Kimchee protects your eyes from the sun. It's true, I heard it on the internet. |

yeah.. right.
I have 'Asian' eyes, which are always bothered by the sunlight; I wear sunglasses all the time - I prefer that to the squinty look, 'cos the squinting makes me look even more slitty-eyed. (Tzechuk, you have that problem too?!)
Maybe kimchi prevents cataracts?
Nah, on a more serious note, I think Korean women prefer either the Power Rangers visor, or a nice floral-print umbrella.

What is it about Kimchi, anyway?
Last week a Korean friend told me, straight-faced, that Kimchi is now the most popular food in all of East Asia because Kimchi is the reason that SARS never affected Korea.
Never seen food become such a source for national pride as Kimchi. |

| I was also told Koreans don't need to wear sunglasses because their eyes have no difficulty coping with strong sunlight. Seems plausible to me. Whites have skin that burns and eyes that get dazzled... |

| I used to love wearing sunglasses and always wore them on sunny days no matter what anyone said to me about them. Then one day I had to wear a hat thanks to a bad hair cut. And wow......I didnt' need the sunglasses! The hat completely shaded my eyes and didn't allow the sun to glare down between my face and the sunglasses. No more squinting. I don' teven know where my sunglasses are anymore--it's hats all the way for me now. |

well, that's a total lie cuz i need them all the time. i also don't want to have ample forehead wrinkles in my 30's.
i think the concept of 'wearing sunglasses' is still fairly new to most koreans. we think of them as a 'fashion item', but not as a 'must-have' item on sunny days. |

I was advised to make sure I wear sunglasses (I have blue eyes) because I'm more suseptible to eye problems from the sun. I'm not sure why but I vaguely remember grade 10 BIO.....blue eyed/green eyed..? people are missing something in their eye that brown eyed people have. It acts like some kind of filter...not for light but for something harmful from the sun that we aren't physaically aware of until later...cataracts maybe..? |

That's stupid. I'm Korean and I wear sunglasses all the time and they fit perfectly. Koreans don't wear sunglasses because the elders think that you have "little respect" respect for them - they can't see your eyes when you talk to them. I personally agree with them. I hate it when people talk to me face to face and keep their sunglasses on. I think people should make eye-contact when talking to each other. |

Koreans eat a lot of garlic in general - it's in almost every one of our dishes. Kimchi has a lot of garlic in it and garlic is good for boosting your immune system (Kimchi also has live bacterial culture that's good for bowel movement - similar to the bacterial culture in yogurt). All countries that eat a lot of garlic didn't get many people with SARS.
Kimchi is popular because its delicious - no other reason. |

If that were true, there'd be no need for the plastic bookboxes or, that ultimate fashion statement, the visor. But as other posters have pointed out, perhaps there exists a 'rudeness quotient.' Will Confucius ever expire and leave these people alone to discover the concept of individualism? |
