|
|
Is anyone here up on any slang talk, or common expressions used by youth these days? I feel too old making the comments we used to make when I was a kid. But I have to start teaching some young adults and thought that more apropo youth expressions would be of interest to them. What's more, knowing some expressions might also help with some of the young people on this board, since I feel like I'm too old here too. |

Rather than a list of expressions, you might want to get a video/DVD of a popular movie with young people and select just some scenes to show, with the vocabulary. Something like Legally Blonde, for example. Maybe a TV sitcom? I wouldn't try to show the whole movie since you want to teach just certain expressions. |

This link is good for a couple of yucks: http://www.rapdict.org/Main_Page
A lot of it is probably a bit, um, "inappropriate," but then again, a lot of it has gone totally mainstream. In fact, I would imagine that anything that's been posted online is pretty mainstream.
It's pretty fun to introduce this vocabulary (in the States, at least) in a Don Pardo voice and the statement, "It is my understanding that this is what the kids are saying these days."
Word. |

I know that "youth" is not a common expression these days. |

what age group?
if they are middle school high school definately try videos targeted to thosse ages (things like Lindsay lohan(sp??) movies. Assuming you are trying to teach american slang.
Also I agree that tv shows are a great way.
For younger kids, pick up some english cartoons--Look at what is playing on cartoon network and go and download some epis.
Get them penpals or e-pals, from abroad. |

A lot of Korean students are into the sit-com "Friends". You could try to find/download a few episodes. |

It's also fair to warn your students that while some slang is appropriate for all groups and age - I don't think "cool" has even gone out of style - certain slang just doesn't work for everyone.
I would never use "bling bling" or "peeps" except when being ironic. I am very, very white and very, very middle class. Serious use of those terms would make most people look at me oddly. I would guess that the same is true for any foreign language student who did the same.
It sounds like computer slang might be of immediate use to these students, though. They have immediate access to the internet and multi-player games. Basic to advanced internet slang might serve them well. |
