Wow -- I just came back to show someone the snowball that was my Life in Pohang request, and I see some recent action in the thread -- go me!
Yes, I ended up coming to Pohang, and I am STILL HERE...and prolly will be for a while...so other current Pohangsters, post away, secure in the knowledge that the thread isn't being hijacked.
I am thegadfly, and I approve of this message. |
But you never post do you gadfly?
Just to gloat!!!
Where's some info for the newbies (or the oldies). 1 good turn deserves another. |

You are absolutely right about posting for the newbies, but a bit wrong about me not posting...haven't done so in a while, true, but I DO post...usually answers to questions, occasionally I try to stir up an argument by explaining how great a job teaching English in Korea is compared to teaching high school English in US public schools...but no one who HAS taught in the US public school system has disagreed enough to even call it a heated debate -- hell, they are more aptly called polite discussions...guess I dun have the flameworthy views of some of the folks of yesteryear....
'tweren't meant to be a full-on gloat, neither...just a hint of a gloat, the merest glimmer....a smidgen of a sliver of a preening glance....so a gloamer smilivereenlance?
Pfft! Eat yer Wheaties, and my old advice about making use of the Traveler's Cheque loophole seems to be obsolete -- since January, the tactic dun't work the way it used ta..... |

Hiya! I posted a few weeks ago about expat bars... or something...? Anyway, someone told me to look for this thread... took me a while but I found it!
Speaking of which... when is the best time to go to an expat bar? Fri/sat night? Ive been here 4 weeks now and havent met a single foreigner! I live in Heung-hae and the teachers have been keeping me busy every weekend with movies, sightseeing, etc Im not complaining, Im having a great time but I know im gunna want to meet someone from a similar culture to my own soon...
So, if anyone sees a lost looking foreigner walking around it'll probably be me! |

I generally find a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or occasionally a Sunday night were good times for drinkin in Pohang. |

For the newbies who may have gotten some outdated info:
The Giant Step bar has closed down and relocated to Dei-dong. It is not the glorious cheers-esque palace of debauchery it once was.
The old Hess has also closed.
Mindy, the former head bartender at the new Hess bar, quit or was fired (depends who's story you wanna believe). She has since opened Mindy's bar, which is a stones throw-up away from Marlboro bar. From the post office, head toward Marlboro. When you reach the cross street where you would turn left to reach the Marlboro, hang a right instead and look up. The sign is clear and it's on the second floor. Usually a little busy on the weekends. Beware U.S. servecemen with no class who enjoy play-boxing and dry-humping the ladies.
I believe Leeway's, accross from the Megaline cinema, is still pretty popular with the teachers.
The newest addition is a bonafide hip-hop club called M1 or M2, not sure. Don't exactly know where it is either, maybe near the Kiss club. Supposedly it's the real shiznitz, not korean style.
Have a good one, and remember to visit the chicken man before, after, or during your drinking festivities. He deserves it. |

Leeway is pretty popular, although it doesn't seem to build up until 11 or so. Mr Lee is top notch, record collection gets bigger by the week. We'll be there tonight. (Like most Friday nights). Poker nights are there Thursdays, although I haven't been for a month. Most of the participants have afternoon/evening classes meaning they can lose money till the early hours of Friday morning, lucky buggers. Not comfortable enough with my bosses to try the red-eyed, soju stinky teacher stunt yet.
Haven't been to many of the others in the downtown area, although I have experienced this new 'hip-hop' joint mentioned above. Can't remember where it is, courtesy of too many predrinks at Mr Lee's, PhD. There's a 10,000 won door charge, but apparently the beers are cheap once in. As stated before I can't recall, but I always had a fresh coldie in the hand. Despite all that it was average... It's not really my bag though, so you might love it. Pretty chockers with locals.
Went to the Busan area for the long weekend just past, with seemingly a zillion other pasty hogwan slaves. Good times. Deffo going back there in Sept/Oct for the film festival. Checked out Bulguksa on "Buddha's b'day". Bloody amazing as is Gyeongju itself. Did a trip up to Seoul to see what all the fuss is about, and took out half of Bandi and Luni's in the process.
Cracker night tomorrow here at Bukbu . Although the rain might put it off till next weekend
Also, what's this chicken man dealie? Heard so much, but he's yet to pop up on my radar. Should I be seeking him out? |

wow, its great to see the pohang thread back up and running again!
leon-d, how can you call yourself a pohangster with having visited The Chicken Man (whatthefunk gets down on one knee, crosses himself and says 18 hail marys)?? he is the greatest man in pohang, if not in the south of korea. he sells chicken in front of the bank, just down from the main post office on that major corner. hes usually there only at night, but alas, he takes a month or two long summer vacation about now, so you may have to wait a bit. |

Just another snooty Seoulite here asking impertinent questions. For the record, though, what's your opinion on the whole Pohang vs. Ulsan debate anyway? (Okay, there isn't any debate ... just made that up) But seriously, how do you rate yourselves and your city vis-a-vis the Big U, the Big Smoggy, The Shipyard, whatever you Pohonkers call Ulsan, hmm?
Is it a case of "who needs it!"? Or does it boil down to "big good, small bad"? Do you pine for those free weekends when you can cast cares and inhibitions to the wind and head down to the "big-city hustle" of Ulsan, South Korea, where one can score such decadent delights as .... bed sheets, hot-water bottles, long underwear, fresh eggs, salted pork, coffee by the bean, and what other victuals, dry goods and provisions you require for the long winter months? Which of those two is it, then?
I'm asking because for all its doubtless charms, I can't think of another major city (with the possible exception of Incheon) that gets as much bad press from foreign teachers on Daves as does Ulsan. Or was I drunk when I read all those threads and posts, and they were actually ripping on Pohang, whereas Ulsan's the "Pearl of the Southeast"?
Tell me true, Which do you like best? |

The is an allegedly fierce rivalry betwen the MIGHTY Pohang Steelers and that crapola Ulsan soccer team (we won in last years semi-final, marong)

Pohang is famous all over Korea for it's local delicacies. Gwamaegi being the most famous (A raw freeze cured fish), the chicken man. As for the other....sheets, hotties and long undies, well Pohang breeds men not flowers.

I've been to Incheon a few times and had a great time. I just think that many people here come from a background where entertainment is a phone call or a short drive away. All laid on for you to have what ever time you are looking for. Not many folk have had to be resourceful and create something for themselves. I meet many people in seoul who moan about its feeble hardships constantly. A year in Pohang would sort them out.
If I was living I Pohang now I would certainly entertain the idea of forming a Pohangster Ulsanite monthly football/boozeup/jam session. Maybe something for Leon, Sanchez, Sheba, and the gadfly to do.

I often miss the community spirit of the small town and that attitude of digging in to make it an awesome experience. I think you have to carry a fat sense of humour in those cities.
I can't answer that question as I love where I live now, but am always thankful for Pohang.
Also I'll be down this weekend for the madness. Long tea juceyo!! |

Awesome. It's lookin good down there and the spirit is still alive.
But the real reason I am posting is I decided my last post was invalid of any real philiosphy or wit. So.
Grab em by the beak! deliver a karate chop to the neck!, when the geese invade we'll know how to beat them.

did you frequent the Leeway? That place was packed on Friday night.
Was at Mindy's bar tonight for the first time, and it was pretty relaxed, with some good music... but I've been informed that it's fairly shit when the Marines rock up. |

Beep? Beep?!? I can't remember writing that shit.
Also.... cracker night was fucking awesome, especially the "I love POSCO" display at the end, churning thick smoke into the air. High comedy. |
