My college has suddenly come out with a form for us to fill out. We're supposed to in detail tell them about every trip abroad we've made; the addresses of our parents, sisters and brothers; we have to draw a map to the place where we live in Korea. ... I think they're nuts, and there's no way I'll do it.

Choose your battles.

And lie through your teeth on the form.

This sounds like one case where you need to ask the question that drives all Koreans insane.

WHY?

Why are you asking me for this information?
Are you asking all the Koreans for the same information?
What are you going to do with this information?

If they dont answer your questions satisfactorly dont answer theirs.

just say no to stupidity.

Yes, now please step over here to the polygraph... That's it, just rest your hand upon the pad. Relax and breath naturally. Now then, tell us alllll about that long weekend in Bangkok, and don't leave out any of the specifics or you're fired! Razz

Uh-oh... there seems to be some little _discrepancy_ here. Our operatives in your country have confirmed that your brother no longer resides at the address you've given us. You know you are required to inform us within two weeks of his change of address. Please do not disappoint us like this again.

We have followed the map to your home that you gave us, but it led to a manufacturer of artificial limbs. Ha ha, very funny. We will be sending one of our staff to accompany you home today, and he will draw the map for us. [/silliness]

Be thankful they're not asking you for the educational achievements and total assets of each of your family members -- and your religious affiliation -- as some government agencies here do.

This sounds like the same info the USFK asks its civilian employees.
When I was starting to work at the New Car Sales (big overbearing mistake), I had to fill out similar info, but I just wrote that everyone lived at home and I did have to draw a strip-map to my house too.

If you don't want to tell them where you live, just draw a map to the lousiest pub in your neighborhood Laughing

every school I have ever worked at asked for details about trips overseas during vacation plus a contact email. Basically something along the lines of I'm going to Thailand my email address is [email protected]

Simple and I think that is as much detail as any employer has a right to know.

The same info is expected from Korean public school teachers too.
Many of them also resent the big brother intrusion & just lie.

That's exactly right, Schwa. Part of a project we were doing required fairly regular access to some (marginally) sensitive government installations, and to obtain clearance we were asked to provide what was, in my view, extremely exhaustive and intrusive personal and family information. For the Korean staff, it was "Big deal! This is no more than they ask a middle school teacher." For myself, however, it wasn't just the "Why do you want to know that?", but "Gads, do you really need to know my brother-in-law's salary and personal net worth?!! I don't even know it, and I'll be damned if I'm going to ask him!"

They really did expect me to gather and provide them all that personal info on my family (none live in Korea), and my personal religious beliefs. when I expressed alarm and frustration, the client (a young representative from the Korean government) replied glumly, "I agree it's an invasion of personal privacy. It's because America divides our country... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad " Shocked

A coworker of mine and I were told to fill out a six-page form at one time on the colour and consistency of our stool. How's that for personal. Embarassed

They're creating a bio for students and parents to see, so they learn more about their teacher... or perhaps the staff, too.

Heck, lie if you want. They will never know.

The thing that freaked me out a bit is that the Korean manager they got to translate the whole thing didn't bat an eyelid.

Shocked

I have never been asked to fill out a form giving details of my private life. BUT, many of my Korean co-workers have asked me similar questions (verbally).

If I was asked to fill out a form I would only do so if my employer insisted and then I would make up 90% of what I put in there.

Don't worry. Most of the stuff I've been asked is pretty innocuous (birthday, home address, phone number, passport number, universities attended, etc). You know someone is having fun at your expense it they ask questions in the line of , "Do you have a vestigial twin?" or "Have you ever suffered from injuries caused as a result of autoerotic intent?". Laughing
