So, I've been reading about some of the "incidents" a few of us have been having with drunk/psycho people in Korea. We all know that every city has them but for some reason the ones here seem different. Maybe it is because, for the most part, Koreans are quite friendly towards foriegners. Or maybe it's just another part of this Korean culture that mystifies us.

One thing that has always bothered me is how "officials" deal with these buggers. usually I'll see a drunk Ajosshi pushing around police officers or some guy who wants to smoke in the subway and no official can seem to get him to stop. Sometimes, I long for North American justice, where a big burly cop will give them a swat in the head. Well, it jus may be changing in Korea...


The other day I was walking through Seoul Station (i do so most days of the week) and as always there were LOTS of drunks and homeless about. For the most part they stick to themselves huddled around bottles of.. stuff, but occasionally they get loud.

This one guy was screaming (and so I looked) at two young, green shirted security guards. Now this is quite a normal event but what happened next wasn't. One of the young guards started yelling back! I'm not sure exactly what he said but it was clear he was not taking this drunks lip. The drunk seemed shocked and tried to lunge for the "boy". The otehr security guard (maybe playing the good cop) kind of held him back. This continued on while lots of people watched and eventually it got more physical until... the young guys put him down on the ground and dragged him out!!!

I was so impressed that finally someone in a position of authority (ok, he had a green shirt on) stood up to this type of social menace. I know it's only an isolated incident but... maybe it's a sign of things to come?

I hope it is a sign of things to come. I get annoyed with the nuisance a lot of these old drunks cause, screaming, vomiting, staggering into you on the street, menacingly growling at you as you walk past.

It's about time they started doing something about these idiots. I have nothing against the old guys who behave well but a lot of people simply should not drink as they cause such trouble for others when they do.

Yep. One of these days these Korean cops will use those big ass sticks they carry around. My brother in law is a cop. Used to be a street cop up until a year ago.

He's was told not to use it. Ever. He told me a story how he broke up a fight and everyone walked away. He's yelling at them and what not....they ignore him.

They need to start smacking their kids around at a younger age. Show them that authority figures are the boss...not them.
