If you're between jobs and in Corea for the rest of June,
then just checking you know that the good people at the Whale Embassy in Ulsan are open for business and looking for volunteers.
This includes teaching extra-fun-time free English classes on Saturday afternoons. From what I've been told by Jody the Canadian, who's an esl teacher in Ulsan and is hanging out with the peoples there, it's all emphasis on fun, not tests and grading style.
They also are happy just to meet new people, and have a hand with daily life there ie. cooking etc.

Good luck in the job hunt!

Is it a legal place to work?
You do understand that even volunteering your time to teach English -- for orphans or wherever -- is 100% illegal without approval from immigration.
I immigration asked this question directly once. |

ROFL
Derrek mate,
if everything that was 'illegal' or that was officially decreed by every twerp in a suit (especially at immigration) was actually enforced - nay, was actually important to any extent - most of the country would be in prison by now... especially all those pesky rascally do-gooder foreigners who keep volunteering their time at orphanages...!
I guess you never made it to an orphanage yet? I hope you do one day.
I really recommend you do so...
once you get on the bus to Ulsan, the rest is easy?
But at this rate, if we worry about what guys with little tools in suits think, our opportunity to be somewhere useful - in relation to the whales as well - is passing. The IWC finishes on June 24th.
PM me if you want a copy of an excellent article that spells it out better than I can here. I can't post it cos it's copyrighted (and that would be illegal!); oh and, it's a bit long.
... and let me know if you want a hand getting involved with orphanages too.

This post edited for unnecessary sarcasm and negative tone.
(PS - some of my best friends work for immigration.)

Reinforcing a long held view that Greenpeace members are a bunch of tools. |

Hey, gmat,
wow, that was pretty oblique. To whom might you be referring there?
One can only make an assUMPTION as to whom you may be referring...
Were you, by any chance, ASSuming anyone here was a Greenpeace member?

Look, why are so many people here so negative about such good positive stuff that's happening here? There's a bunch of people who have come around the world to do good stuff that we and our grandkids will be able to appreciate, hopefully, and more likely so if they get enough support. That's all I'm after - trying to find who among the readers here has interest and inclination for supporting the positive stuff that is happening in Ulsan right now.
Have a nice day, all. |

Sorry, but it was the tone of your reply to Derek that was negative.

gmat,
okay, I agree. My tone was unnecessarily negative. It was sarcastic and condescending. Thanks for calling me on that.
Derrek,
I apologise. I take it back.
Thanks for pointing out the potential for issues with legality.
... Guess I'm tired of getting negativity in response for something positive so mistook Derrek's post as a troll or flame;
and remembered too many times in my 3.5 years in Corea, and other places too, where the law was just completely irrelevant, both for better and worse.
I also have a personal distaste for apathy;
but at the same time I'm not looking for replies of any kind here or anywhere else.
I'm just trying to get the word out. There seems to be so little publicity happening for such a huge historic event just down the road. I'll do what I can to support it. |
