Agreed.
Not about the scare part in most cases, but about the bad part.
9 times out of 10 it's a bad thing.

I would definitely sign an online petition to make it illegal.

And I would forward that petition to everyone I know.

Any sort of media that automatically loads when viewing a page is bad. I espeically hate flash media and the worst is the flash preview animation before the real content. I don't click skip, I leave and go to another site.

Yeah the stupid page makes your browser hang for a bit while it loads. You have no idea it's loading a music file. "Why does my browser seem frozen?" No one cares about your music.

I guess I'm the only one that gets scared. I'm usually consumed with what I'm surfing for or looking at and then out of the blue is a noise I did not expect. Scares me like a really super efficient well executed "BOO" joke.

I think pages like that are products of people who have never made websites before.

I've worked with people who have made pages like this for their academic departments. They need to learn the secret, "just because you can add music/flash/animated .gifs, doesn't mean you should".

On my work computer I somehow have the flash settings so that flash never opens automatically. I would love to know how this happened. Any thoughts?

I agree with you all, except when it comes to Cyworld. Anyone who has used it for a while knows that almost all pages have music, and that you can push esc to turn it off right away. Doesn't freeze the browser either.
If you use Firefox though the music won't load, which is nice.

You mean there is no way not to have music on a cyworld page?

I seem to recall a thread asking how it can be enabled (or some such thing) in the "off-topic" forum.

Korean "hompy" usually have some syrupy music...just like when you call a Korean cell phone and the tone you hear is a song instead of ringing. I think it's cultural. I guess they figure hearing a loud, distorted ballad through a 2mm speaker is good.

The other thing that bugs me is when pages have sounds when you hover over a link....a kind of digital "click". Again, seems this happens on Korean and Japanese pages.

The only western sites I know of that have music (at least, the ones I visit) are musical groups' main pages.

I agree 99% of the time, but think I have found an exception- the music on this fits really well and isn't too intrusive.
