I read that and it REALLY discouraged any ideas I had of potential possibilities of thinking of Saipan, Guam, etc. as potential places.. |

| wtf was deep as of yesterday. And look at it this way- most south Pacific islands (Tahiti, Guam, Samoa, Kiribati etc.) were put on this earth so that pale folks can get drunk, sunburned and lucky. I don't know if I could see myself living in Guam even. A.S./Saipan is definitely out. And if the folks at Shaloha can be believed, Hawaii is not all that great either. |

One of the main reasons I was so interested in the Gulf of Texas.. is because its one of the few ocean-side properties in the U.S. thats not only NOT significanlty over-valued for real estate. Actually its significantly under-valued.
Another Corpus Christi question:
Heard there were oil refineries all up and down that area. Is that true? |

| I am an UTMB Galveston grad. Galveston is po' and Corpus is too sho' nuff. There's but a few strips of high priced reel estate but most folks rely on the guvament check to make ends meet. |

There are quite a few refineries in the area. You don't really see them unless you leave the city. When you do though, there are a lot of them. I think I remember seeing a few offshore drilling sites but they were far enough from the coast so they weren't that noticeable. |

| If you're comparing Chorpus Christi to Portland, Portland would win hans down. But, if you really want to check out a cool place in Texas, try Austin. I went there for a week a few years back. REALLY cool place. Right up there with Eugene, OR or Chapel Hill, NC. |

If I had to live in Texas (note had too), Austin is the only place I would live. It actually had character. Cool things to do. I would actually drive 3 hours to Austin and 3 backfor the day just to buy some music that I couldn't find in Corpus. Plus, I loved getting out of Corpus. |

Amen to that brother. Austin definitely has its own style as well as some of the best Tex-Mex food ever. Try Chuy's if you ever go there. Great margaritas and great homespun indie rock |

I visited Austin.. actually I didn't care for it too much. But I went through on a weekday night and it was dead.
Portland I love though.
Actually the two places I liked in Texas was San Antonio and Galveston just based on very brief visits.
The only real attraction is the cheap real estate though. Portland wins hands down for everything.. but the average house is $181,000.. whereas in cities like Corpus Christi/San Antionio its around $80,000 for the average house! Saving a $100,000 over a course of a lifetime adds up to a significant chuck of retirement nest egg money someday. |

Austin is at $172,000.. on the plus side its just about at a fair market value (meaning housing prices are relative to wages earned in that market). This website puts Portland Oregon at $212,000 is at 21% over market value for housing.. meaning a fairly HUGE bubble over that city and wages not being able to afford the housing costs.
On the plus side.. because the bubble is so big there.. its just a matter of time before the number of foreclosures and auctions start happening.. so maybe in several years.. or could even be another 5-10 or something.. but wouldn't want to buy anything anytime soon in a market like that. |

So where would you go if you went back to the US?
Yeah, I'm thinking less and less of Texas.. too hot.. not a culture I'm really into.. plus I absolutely can't stand Mariachi music (and I'm sure the southern parts of Texas where I'm interested in, would have that in the bucketloads). |

Having half the population be Mexican disqualifies it? Besides, a Mexican in south Texas is a whole lot better off than one in East Harlem where I spent almost five years and am, evidently, damaged goods. |

Well, I'm not American but if I were to live in the States again I'd probably live in California. Not that California is that special. Nice weather but I don't find much else appealing about it. I'd probably only live there because I have some good friends there.
Somewhere in the northeast might be alright for awhile. Chicago maybe. Probably not northwest though. I'd rather live in Vancouver. Otherwise, there are a few places I'd like to visit. Sante Fe, St. Louis (that arch fascinates me) but I'd never live there. |
