Spending by those in 20s is rising
More young adults are opening their wallets despite the sagging economy here, with some saying it is a sign of a recovery to come and others linking it to a possible second credit card binge. The spending trend is evident at restaurant chains. Bennigan's says the number of customers ages 18 to 25 climbed 25 percent in May from a year earlier, but the number of total visitors rose only 8.9 percent. At department stores, spending by consumers in their 20s has increased 10 to 20 percent every month since February, while spending by those in their 30s, 40s and 50s grew only 1 to 5 percent, according to industry data.... "New card companies are marketing aggressively, especially by issuing more cards to consumers in their 20s," an industry representative said.

Household debt posted its biggest increase in 19 months in May as consumers borrowed more to buy properties and stocks, a central bank report showed.
