If you read my request to borrow someone's laptop, then you would know my oldest daughter is in the hospital right now. Because of this, I am becoming the sole care-giver for my younger daughter...

We were out on the street strolling looking for puppies and fish. When a man came up and ask three times if my daughter spoke Korean. I answered yes even though at 2 her spoken language skills are suspect in both of her languages...

He smiled...said she was cute and then opened his wallet. I thought he was going to give me a business card and ask me to work for him...but instead...he gave my daugther 10 000 won. I may have a new business here...wandering the streets looking for people who apparently have way too much money in their wallets...

On Saturday I joked to my wife that we could set up outside of Samsung Plaza and have the little girl sing for money. She knows all these cute songs, and she can't take two steps without someone exclaiming how cute she is -- so I put 2 and 2 together and figured we'd be millionaires by roughly this winter. Then we'd take a vacation, because it's a sin to make a little girl stand out in the cold and sing.

I wonder whether they reward all children for cuteness or just foreign children.
I understand that it used to be customary for white people in the Southern United States to give pennies to cute little pickaninnies.
Flannery O'Connor wrote a short story about a white woman who tried to give a penny to a Black child, but it so happened that the child's mother was carrying a purse full of rocks, ready and alert for such an event.
The story ends with the white woman dying from a concussion in the skull.

How odd....later they'd use the rocks to get money from white women.

Of course I took the money....and yes it will go for beer....(Chiaa, I told you that bilingualism was good...though there is nothing in the books I have you about making money off of it...)

Tomato...my kid isn't a foreigner...she holds a Korean passport...and that is the only passport she holds...and the cuteness factor was only half of it...it was her ability to say hi in Korean that seemed to make us the real money...I think pure cuteness would only have gotten 5K....

why would you let people give your kid money because she's attractive? it automatically starts conditioning her at a young age to understand that attractive girls are rewarded with money, and that there's nothing wrong with that. i would tell the man to give the money to one of those guys without legs, begging on the street.

Bingo! Probably the most sobering remark I have seen on this board ever. Beautiful people get all the breaks. The last thing Korea needs are more women with princess disease. (No offense paperbag. You seem to have a functioning mind.) Smile

I agree. Years ago my wife and I took our (young) children with us on an extended tour through many countries. Our 5 year old daughter had long blonde hair and blue eyes. In Singapore and in Greece the locals were all over her and gave her money and candy.

We were embarassed but she loved all the attention.

It got so bad that she was disappointed if she was not the centre of attention. We had to put a stop to it after she said in a loud voice, when we were in a restaurant, "where is my candy"?

Now she is much older and can't even remember the incident but her mother and I haven't forgotten.

Hell no. People can give me money whenever they want. My cute kid, my cute husband, cute me. I'm not at all fussy as to where money comes from.

'Sides, the guy without legs is probably just being exploited by family members. It's not like it's a more noble cause.

She's two...she doesn't know what attractive is...she doesn't know what money is...I took the money because..because..its money...someone wants to give my daughter money...more power to them...conditioning...once is not conditioning...and somehow I doubt this is any sort of trend...

It was just a strange little incident...kind of funny...not really worth any deep debate...and hardly worth calling my two year old a prostitute...but some people like to read stuff into things so they can make little comments and feel good about themselves...more power to you too...if this is what make you feel good...
