Looks like I should clear my calendar for the last two weeks of November.

Has anyone else played Freeciv? Can you play it alone?

I dl'd it and just sort of browsed it without really playing. It looks a lot like the first civ- not enough to pull me away from CIV3 (but if I didn't that I'd use freeciv). Yes, you can play solo, and there are a bunch of nations from modern, ancient and fictional (elves, martians, etc.)

Yeah, i was disappointed that Rome:Total War ended the game on me shortly after I defeated Rome. I hadn't even finished killing off all of the other Roman families yet and I was still, relatively early in the game since there was a freakin lot of territory to be explored still when the game finished.

If they could just iron out the last few flaws from Civ3, Civ4 will be perfect...

Well, I can think of a few directions I'd like to see Civ4 go.

Of course, they won't just iron out the flaws. They'll make wholesale changes with all kinds of new flaws. It'll be worth a look.

2 things that were annoying in previous Civs are supposed to be addressed in Civ4:
City screen- you won't have to go into the city (or advisor) screen to change your city settings. They say that due to the new 3D aspect of the game you'll be able to zoom in and out seamlessly from low orbit to street level and thereby see what buildings are in a city without changing screens.

AI turn times- in large games you could wait forever for the AI to make all its moves- they say that they have been able to reduce these times and allow more customizable options to further speed up turns.

Attack vs. Defence- they're addressing the problem where- due to defence bonuses- it was not impossible for a spearman (for example) to destroy an attacking armoured unit (or a sailing frigate take out an aircraft carrier).
