It sounds too over the top to be true--but if it is, are press gangs next?

It does sound pretty bizarre. I think a lot of the "kidnapping" charge hinges on how we interpet this sentence:

Quote:
And before Axel, an older cousin and other co-workers knew or understood what was happening, Axel was whisked away in a car.

What is meant by "whisked away"? Forced to get into the car against his will? Or asked in a rather forceful way to get in the car? The narrative jumps from him being at work to his getting in the car. I find it suspicious that the writer doesn't provide more details of what happened between the brewery and the car.

Rolling Eyes

Not only between the brewery and the car, but the whole story has holes all over it.

No doubt recruiters are having a more difficult time, but does this story really sound plausible? Of course it doesn't. My guess is that the kid really wanted to join against the wishes of his mother. Then, when she went ape shit after she found out about his testing he backpeddled big-time to make everything sound more sinister than it really was. Anyway, a subsequent article states that he's attending some college now.

Anyone catch the Doonesbury take on this a week or so ago in the Korea Times? Recruiter desperation, evidently, is a real issue. Were I an American parent of kids of an impressionable age, I'd be wary too.

At least the writer could have made the exagerrations more believable.

Why?

The writer knows that Liberals will believe anything so long as it puts the military or President Bush in a bad light. No need to check facts or claims. Just throw it out in print.

Just curious what parts of the article you two think were exagerated. I think RSR might be guilty of it, alittle, with the use of the word "kidnapping," but that's about all.

A few problems with the article:

(a) It claims that the family was harrased by a "relentless barrage of calls". What I would like to know is: Why did they have his phone number in the first place? And why were they allegedly spending so much time on one potential recruit? Did he sign and then try to back out? That would be about the only reason I could see them spending so much time on one potential recruit instead of spending that time on other potential recruits.

(b) The second problem is more severe. The article claims that before Axel knew what was happening he was "whisked away in a car". Come on. They simply marched into the restaurant and dragged him out? That's just a bit unbelievable (quite a lot unbelievable in fact). So what happened in the interval in which the recruiters came in and Axel left with them. Something isn't being told (and by its absense it's likely something that doesn't support the story). And what was his older cousin (who was there) doing during all this? What were his co-workers doing? This story stinks to high heaven.

(c) He was told to sign papers that he hadn't read. If he actually did this, without reading them first, well then he's a idiot. He's 17 years old for crying out loud. Is he that clueless about the world?

Another poster suggested that Axel went and signed up and then upon opposition from his family tried to back out. That scenario seems far more likely than Marine Recruiters pouncing on one person who (to judge from the article) never gave the slightest sign of interest.

Did you see the recruiters in Michael Moores F 9/11?

Those boys were operators.

Mind you I think MM is as big a dork as GWB, but that was some powerful footage of the recruiters in action. They will make excellent used car salesmen if they ever want to get out of the military.

Yeah, that was some interesting footage. The recruiters played all the angles, and were saavy enough to find out that the guys liked hip-hop and then mention that a well-known hip-hopper had been a marine.
