I got very good at Photoshop 6.0, and then lots changed, and I'm not so hot anymore. I learn best by doing, so I'd spend lots of time looking at other people's work and imitating techniques, and playing with features.

I think that's more complicated in later versions; if I had to learn now, I'd combine the plagerism method with book study. Also, there's tons of forums out there for photoshop users, graphic designers, and artists of all shapes and flavors. You might try them, too.

As I told my students. There are two things that make you good with programs like Photoshop. One is the technical ability to use the program and the other is having an eye to what looks good.

I've got a Photoshop CS pdf. It's very thorough. With a lot of practice, you should be making some great stuff.
