Last week I bought this, and yesterday I finally got a chance to watch it. What an amazing film, Scorsese's best work since 'Casino'.

That aside, a question for anyone who has seen the film, or who owns the Korean-released DVD (by Bitwin):

Is the color purposefully off for some parts of the film? For example, during the scene where Hughes and Hepburn play golf, the grass looks more blue than green. Similarly, during a scene where Hughes is served dinner at a nightclub, the peas on his plate also have a very blueish tint. Maybe this is a flaw on the disc, as, later in the film, the greens of Hepburn's family's estate are fine. Or maybe it was done intentionally by Scorsese et al (though I highly doubt it).

I'm contemplating taking the disk back, but first I want to make sure that it's actually flawed, and that other Bitwin disks are dissimilar.

I watched in the theater and noticed the grass things and wondered what the hell was up with that. Didn't notice the peas. In any case, I don't think your disk is fucked.

Interesting. I'm assuming you saw it in a Korean theater, beav. Anyone have a similar experience seeing it abroad?

Anyone have a copy of the 2-disc NA DVD to compare the Bitwin one with?

I watched it in a theater here in the US. I didn't notice anything odd about the colors.

The plot thickens.

OK. I just found these. They confirm that I am not crazy. Scroll about half way down on each one and read about the blue scenes and why they are that way. Personally I think this sucks and, in my opinion, ruins the movie. Who ever ate blue peas or saw blue grass?

Color me surprised. This from www.imdb.com:

Quote:
Martin Scorsese designed each year in the film to look just the way a color film from that time period would look. Achieved mainly through digitally enhanced post-production, Scorsese recreated the look of Cinecolor and two-strip Technicolor. Watch in particular for the scene where Howard Hughes meets Errol Flynn in the club. Hughes is served precisely placed peas on a plate, and they appear blue or turquoise - just as they'd have looked in the primitive two-strip Technicolor process. As Hughes ages throughout the film, the color gets more sophisticated and full-bodied. Cate Blanchett had three different red-hair wigs for this film.

I thought that was pretty obvious while watching the movie. It's one of the reasons why I enjoyed it so much.

The Aviator was his best film since Good Fellas. Nothing he directed after Fellas was remotely as good, except maybe The Departed, which he ripped off from Infernal Affairs. Shine A Light was quite a good music doc, but it would appear Scorsese's best years are well behind him, as evidenced by that abortion known as Shutter Island.

Bringing Out The Dead was made after Casino and that was pretty good. Hell, he only had three films between Casino and The Aviator. With Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Cape Fear under his belt, I can forgive his less than great films and I think it's pretty premature to write him off just because you didn't like Shutter Island.
