Correct. I meant that the smaller vehicles drive on the right side, as all vehicles in America do (as opposed to the left as in Britain). In Taiwan this usually means the compact cars, because any large vehicle has right of way to drive directly down the center of the road, and motorcycles generally squeeze in wherever they can, often on sidewalks and indeed sometimes in indoor hallways.

Taiwan has an innovation somewhat like an American "four-way stop" which I call the "four way GO". The rule is, whichever vehicle honks its horn first is free to pass through the intersection at murderous speed, and vehicles coming from the perpendicular direction must swerve wildly, on the sidewalk if necessary, to insure the safety of the horn-honking vehicle.

Thank you for the post about jaywalking. I always enjoy hearing from someone who broke a rule/law that other people are also breaking rules and therefore "I" should not be punished.

This is indeed ironic, considering how many threads are out there about how the cops do nothing blah blah fucking blah.

Quite simply, crossing the street illegally. Away from a designated crossing area, against the light, etc.

I think the scariest thing I have seen in Korea was one which I have only seen on TV previously in seriously 3rd world style countries and a long time ago in Taiwan.
There was a man on a bike, his young son in front between his legs, his younger daughter behind him, his pregnant wife behind her, and a small infant in a wrap-around on her back. I'm assuming they were all one family but may have been neighbours or niece/nephew. None of them had on helmets, long sleeves or even in his case, suitable foot wear.
My fear was that if they fell the baby on the back would be killed for sure. No one even looked at them except me so it was not a big deal obviously.

The post about children playing in cars is also one you see so often.

There is a seatbelt law in Korea but only the front passenger ever puts on the belt. You may notice that taxis now have seat belts in the back (they used to literally cut them out) and this is the reason. There is also a law about not having more than 5 persons in a car (including children). Taxis will not carry more than 5 but I have got away with it by pretending not to understand Korean when I was with my 2 grandchildren. With us all in the car the driver gave up and just drove. See, I'm Koreanised - I didn't have them under their seat belts as I should have done.

I worked at a kindergarten (a kindergarten!) in Taiwan and you've just described the morning commute. Mom and dad on their way to work, by motorcycle, drop off two or three kids with us, and head on their way. No helmets!

Taiwanese still do! Once I dug around and found a seatbelt under somebody's back seat, that they'd no idea was there!

Hmmm, I don't understand something. You say you jaywalked (broke the law) and that you consider the policeman who remonstrated with you did so as a racist attack?

How is this racist?

Many of this country's busy city streets don't even have sidewalks.

Pedestrians have no choice but to share the road with the traffic in many places: walking alongside cars, dodging bikes and crossing in front of buses cannot be avoided.

What's the difference between that and jaywalking? And where's the logic?

A Korean cop stopped me today for violating a traffic law. Jaywalking!!! I was flabbergasted. He said he would ticket me if I did it again. I wanted to ask him about how many tickets he had recently issued to the following categories of people.

1. Mortorcycles who speed along the sidewalk expecting pedestrians to leap out of the way. (Not to mention the one that zoomed by behind us as he was expressing his displeasure at me for jaywalking!!)
2. The idiots who drive their cars on the sidewalk (often in reverse) honking at people to move.
3. The ten extra cars that push through an intersection after a red light, threatening the safety of pedestrians.
4. The jerks who come within an inch of hitting pedestrians crossing at each and every crosswalk.
5. The morons who don't even stop at crosswalks.
6. The obnoxious half-drunken adojies who drive their motorcycle with their two-year old daughter on the handlebars.
7. The schockingly irresponsible parents who let their children play at the back window of their speeding car.
8. The lawless dlivery drivers who swerve left and right at high speed as they zoom down a one-way street - in the wrong direction!!
9. Bus drivers who drive like maniacs threatening the safety not only of pedestrians and occupants of other cars, but their own paying passengers
10. etc.
11. etc.
12. etc.

Noooooooooo. Let's not ticket these people. Let's ticket the waygookin for jaywalking!!!

I don't understand - were you speaking all of this in Korean, or was he understanding all of this in English? Either way, that's awesome.

One of the KTs where I work got ticketed for jaywalking on a road that, at any given time of day, you can always observe people jaywalking. She was very surprised. But it's like what, 20,000 won? Not a big deal.

Next time, stick with the second poster's advice and just play it dumb. Do you know another language besides English and Korean? If so, encountering an English-speaking cop would be a good time to employ it.

Lo siento, no hablo Ingles, senor. Usted habla Espanol?

Jaywalking is illegal??? what a retarded rule................ Surely its up to me to decide when and where to cross the road, whats next I have to find a police man to hold my hand when I cross the road? Or maybe I need to get a note from the ministry of justice if I want to go to the bathroom............?

Actually I should suggest things like this they might implement them......

the only time i have been stopped for jaywalking was up on the right side of gyeongbukgung, near the blue house.

i was jaywalking behind a roadblock.

i repeat,

i was jaywalking behind a roadblock.

the cop got this frantic look on his face and said "oh, no no, you no" or some shit like that and beckoned me back to the sidewalk. he pointed to the crosswalk about 50 feet down the sidewalk and told me to use it.

the crosswalk was on the other, more dangerous side of the roadblock, where there were actual CARS that could HIT ME.

funny. we obliged and let the guy continue to be dumber than a bag of salt.

The hardest place to cross a road in my experience was in HCMC. Crosswalks there seem to be a mild suggestion. Many have no traffic light to support the suggestion.
