Question for Daeguers (Daeguites? Daegutonians? Daeguans?)

I have a lead on a job near Daegu. I've only driven past Daegu, so I don't know much about it except it has the reputation for being the hottest city in the country.

What western stores does it have? Wal-Mart? Costco? What part of the city are they in? (I'll be living south of Daegu if I get the job.) Are they easily accessable from the intercity bus station?

Daegu is not bad, and getting better. It has all of the big box stores (a second Carrefour has just opened). There is a decent downtown, and the restaurant scene improves every day.

I don't know about accessability from the intercity terminal. Costco is on the Northeast end of town, there is a Carrefour near the airport and near downtown.

There is currently only one subway line- from the south out to the airport, but a second is opening in September.

hey man. yeah, I, as with many many other foreigners, love this city. Daegu was an unexpected surprise... its very friendly, and there's a great downtown bar scene, has all the western things u need, like shopping and restaurants... its smaller than seoul, but still big enough to feel like a big city. you'll never meet all the foreigners here, there's a lot of us.

i had a friend come down from suwon who just loved the life this city has... although it is not there yet, its coming along... i've seen some changes in the 5 months i have been here...

anyhow, depends on where you'll live... where exactly? susung gu is great. many other areas of the city are good too! you'll be happy here, i am sure! if you are 15 minutes away from downtown you'll be more than happy, trust me! Surprised

To clarify: If I get the job, I'll be living 40 minutes south of Daegu. I'll need to come in to go shopping. Wondered if that was going to be a major hassle--like if the various places I need to shop are scattered all over a strange city that I'm not at all familiar with.

Thanks for your thoughts, but I deliberately looked for a job outside the cities. I've lived in 3 in Korea and want a different experience this time around.

The air can be pretty crappy, so if you have respiratory problems it might be best to stay away on bad days. The textile industry combined with the city being inland and surrounded by mountains makes for a lot of smog.

Daegu's the best city that I've lived in over here, IMO. Is that job going to be in Miryang or something?

I've only been in Daegu once: Waiting for a bus transfer and walking around on the morning of that subway fire in 2003, when that lunatic threw a milk carton full of kerosene into a carriage. Needless to say, my memories of Daegu have been colored a bit negatively.
