i don't know if this belongs in 'technology' or 'off topic', but i'm putting it here in the hopes that the sort of people who cruise the tech forum are the same ones who would be more inclined to answer my question.

i bought a used ps2 today, and took a trip down to yongsan. i was looking for a game called 'wild arms 3', but no one had it, and a couple of people even laughed at me because the game was so old.

anyway, i was wondering if anyone could recommend a good rpg for the ps2.
i'm a fan of the old-school style of rpg, with more modern developments, like being able to customize your characters more, and being able to name them.
what i'm not a big fan of at all is how the final fantasy series has gotten to the point where it's more or less like watching a movie, and having to press a button now and then.

are they still making old-school rpg's, or have i been passed by?

at any rate, at least i've got a dvd player now. thanks.

You're right, Final Fantasy (and the majority of most modern role playing games) now boast 60:40 movie:game ratios...or worse.

Forget the present and future, the past (specifically the late 90s-early-00s) was the heyday of RPG gaming for me....and it'll likely stay that way. Backwards compatability saved my Ps2. If you can lay your hands on them, or haven't already done so there's a wide array of top notch PS1 based RPGs for you to play around with before resorting to the PS2 RPG library.

-Dragon Warrior 7
-Breath of Fire 5
-Lunar 1/2
-Suikoden 1/2
-Persona 2
-Xenogears
-Valkyrie Profile
-Tales of Destiny 1/2

Any of these PS1 rpgs is more likely to satisfy your cravings more than any FF, Xenosaga or MMORPG of the day.

Now that i've skimmed around your actual question...i'll do my best to help you out.

The Suikoden series didn't completely disappoint me on the PS2, and if you're willing to give turn based strategy a chance, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a real winner, as is it's sequal Phantom Brave. I've yet to play it, but the Shin Megami series looks promising....not sure if it's what you're looking for in terms of 'old school' gameplay though.

Hope that helps. Confused

Dragon Warrior 5 and 6 never made it to the states...(kind of like all the 'lost' final fantasy's) DW7 was one of the all time best selling games in Japan, but since it sold like turdcakes in NA I'm not counting on the series continuing over here. Crying or Very sad Great game though, tough as nails.

Best bet for DW 1-3 is an emulator. If you're PS2's modded you can easily set up a dic full of NES games. Search for 'It might be NES' emulator for PS1.

I think they re-made them for Game Boy too, if that floats your boat.

Pulgasori has pretty much listed all the best titles.

Disgaea was THE dark horse hit for PS2. I was thinking "turn based strategy style combat? How droll..".

And proceeded to play it for a ridiculous amount of time. Highly recommended.

Suikoden 3 was a bit hit and miss. I seriously enjoyed WildArms3, but WA4 should be out soon?

Just track down the games listed by Pulgasori, and you'll be more than happy. :)

jae.

I have an X-Box, but I think they ported Phantasy Star to both consoles. Give it a try.

in my quest to feed my urge to play a good rpg on my new system, i went to yongsan and bought a copy of 'dragon quest viii". i didn't let the fact that it hasn't yet been released in north america stop me.
i'm doing considerably well, considering the fact that i don't speak a scrap of japanese. i've figured out the fight menus and some of the other things, and i've found that if you just talk to everyone in every town, and explore everywhere, you can make your way pretty well through the story, even if you have no idea what the story actually is.
