Gyo,
You are an absolute loser.
You think you know about Korea better than I do, but never met me.
You think I am picking up girls in Hongdae, but I'm female and married.
You think I have no friends, and I'm lonely-- you're just describing yourself.
Joke? What joke! If your social skills are this bad in Korean, too, you have no friends at all, that's why you are on the board...
If you'd wanted to be friendly to new people in Korea, you could have purely said "I remember being new to Canada and feeling a little out of the water. If anyone would like to meet me, I can help you have a smoother transition to Korea". If you'd said that, everyone would think you were great. But now.. no, I think you're an idiot. |

| He's also stepping over the fact that there are people like myself and many others, who are on here to give advice to newbs on how to better adjust to living in Korea and appeal for taking the time to learn and understand the culture, language, etc...I can name quite a few on here whose social network consists of over 90% Korean friends. I'd even hazard to say that the majority of regulars here have more Korean friends than foreign friends. I think the OP is generalizing on the 7 or 8 loud-mouths here who regularly talk down Korea and he's implying that the whole board fits this mold. |

Actually,no! I was only referring to SOME people, like my FORMER ROOM--MATE ,who take their frustrations on others, treating them like dirt, just because they're unhappy with themselves. I've met quite a few foreigners who fit this mold; I'm not saying that all do---I certainly don't! That's why I gave the advice of socializing with Koreans---they may not be suffering from the disapointments or stresses that some foreigners here do. |

What! You're talking about Koreans. Being stressed and disappointed with themselves is a striving industry here and I sometimes get the impression that they are secretly proud of this. 'Keeping up with the Joneses" is a national past-time. |

TRUE! They gripe a lot, too, but at least you don't have to hear(at least from some of them)about their ANAL preoccupation of saving every single won, like a lot of foreigners I've met, when you're travelling or socializing with them:they either have to pay off their student loans or other debts,so every outing turns into a neurotic scrooge obssession. My room-mate,for example, constantly smuggly bragged about how much money she saved on this or that--it seemed to be her chief preoccupation/accomplishment in life! Was very boring and annoying, too!
Foreigners also tend to be competitive and jealous of other foreigners, particularly when at the same school, which can also be very annoying and distasteful. My room-mate always gossipped behind my back about how early I have to get up to prepare,my cooking ability,etc,etc...
Socializing with Koreans can take you into a different environment and away from this type of friction:
At least with my Korean friend,I could enjoy life, talk about interesting things, form a warm heartfelt friendship and learn about Korea in a more direct way! |

Look, isn't it obvious that this guy is a total loser? He sounds like many people I know -- gyopo in no man's land. They spent just enough time in US or Canada to know the language and culture but don't quite fit in the mainstream. Yet, because of their time outside Korea, they don't quite fit in mainstream Korean culture, either. So, they are in the middle ground and don't know which way to go. I am rather sympathetic to them.
And there are those who get assimiliated completely and join the mainstream, yet still maintain core Korean culture. And there are those who remain as Korean-Korean, regardless of how long they live in US, Canada or wherever.
What do you think I am? |

Sure, he's a Ÿ in Korean culture, but that doesn't mean we can't point and laugh at him. |

So even Korean Ÿ look down of foreigners?
A lot of the ESL teachers in Korea are living in a fools paradise. They have no idea what Koreans really think of them. |

I think everybody's getting their panties all bunched up for no reason. I don't think gyo's such a bad guy. everybody is so sensitive around here. "ooh, that's racist! ooh he's a big racist!" christ. c'mon people, most of us on this board are white. we're white. big whitey. when they say "f**k the man, " that's us! we're the man! then we go to korea and somebody doesn't let us into a club and all of the sudden we're malcolm X. c'mon, don't take yourself so seriously.
and everybody is so quick so jump on kyopos. everytime a kyopo has an arguement with anybody, somebody on this board always comes in with that "not accepted here, not accepted there" pop psychology crap. which is basically to say, "don't mind him. he's crazy."
and if gyo's a kyopo, then, yeah, he probably does understand korea better than 80% of us. i mean, i'm assuming the majority of us have been here less than 3 years. what does that compare to having grown up in the culture? i don't know gyo's particular story, but i wouldn't be suprised if he was that knowledgable.
i dunno. that's just my feelings. maybe gyo is a dumbass. who knows. |

I think it would more productive to ask why people jump on Kyopo's on this board. I think the reason is that kyopo claim all the rights of being an American (or whatever), but a vocal group of Kyopo in Korea try deny the rights of their 'fellow Americans' (or whatever) in Korea.
I am not an English teacher, but virtually every Kyopo on this board (not all) are very anti white. To them, every white teacher is a 'burger flipper' (why dont I see any white burger flippers in my home country?) or is in an 'unequal relationship' with a Korean woman (white women are generally excluded from the invective - wonder why?).
I am sorry to say that often Kyopo hypocrisy is just too much. They are a walking, talking double standard. |
