This guy gives what I think is the best possible answer to those who say Iraq war critics should spend more time condemning al Qaeda.

Our conduct shouldn't be judged relative to the actions of terrorists. It should be judged on its own; when we say we want to spread democracy and freedom and are prepared to use our military to do it, we implicitly ask others to hold us to a very high standard.

It's a fair point. If we want to claim the high moral ground we have to accept the fact that the playing field is not level. There's no point having the Post harp on and on about Al Quaeda because it's a given among sane people in the West that these groups are beyond nuts and hardly worth talking about beyond news about the latest terrors they inflict.

If we curse them for not playing by the rules we should curse ourselves when we don't play by the rules. The claim to moral superiority comes from believing that Abu Grahib is the aberration rather than the norm. If so, then everything should be done to make sure that Abu Grahib is not the standard. And do something about the embarrassment that is Gitmo. On a related note, transparancy in government should not be discouraged when it is applied to the ruling government--whichever party it represents.

There's nothing wrong with the Washington Post and others harping on the problems of the present administration because its another key difference between ourselves and too many Middle East nations--self-criticism. Do we really want less of it? It's not as if the Post and other don't have enough material to go on--they have loads of it. Reagan went through it, Clinton went through it so Bush can take it too. C'mon Rummy, let the few bastions of media not slavishly following Michael Jackson's or Tom Cruise's latest bowel movement do their job.

Just to keep everyone up on Tom, his girlfriend Katie What'shername is checking out Scientology. Reports that she has converted are premature.

PS: Good post.

If we have to defend ourselves by pointing out that we are morally superior to terrorists, it's a loss.

That says it all.
