the other night i met a girl who is going through a legal battle with the USFK. she was badly beaten by a drunken g.i who followed her home one night. the korean police did nothing and the m.p did nothing. currently she's hoping that the jag will do something about it. this happened in the area near the base, hae-bang-chang.

i don't want to be a fear monger, but people should know about this. be careful if you're out by yourself.

Sadly, those are among the few places in Korea I don't feel comfortable walking alone at night.

I actually feel safer near a US base- they tend to be well lit, and have a visible police presence.

This is no joke. This guy is a dangerous thug and his crimes are being swept aside.

The problem is that Korea does not have laws to protect its women from rape, domestic abuse, assault, etc etc. Its unsurprising that a low life scumbag foreigner has cottoned on to the fact he can join the bandwagon.

Of course, the foreigners crime will be highlighted while Korean men continue the exploitation unnoticed.

I was in a fight in Hae-bong-chon last September (labor day). I found myself getting to snot kicked outta me by 2 men and 1 woman (2 were GI's) I went to the Korean Police Station and they took statements, and then we got hauled my the MPs to the base.... Where we gave additional statements.

The outcome. The female was a sergeant who lost her rank and had to do extra duty and attend AA meetings. The other GI got off... and the other man (the husband) also walked away. The military were actually more upset that a junior slept with a senior officer than someone getting the snot kicked outta them.

Oh well.. I won't pretend to understand the "American Way" of handling things when it comes to their military.

When is the 8th Army moving down to Nowhere-chon? Or is it One-horse-taek?

On two separate occasions I tangled with G.I's.

The first time was my first year here when I was at a club in Hongdae with some friends. Some drunken jarhead found my coat that I stowed in the corner and put it on. When my friend (an American girl) noticed the guy wearing it, she went over to retrieve it for me. When she approached the guy he grabbed her ass and tried kissing her. She smacked him in the face and he lifted his hand as if he was going to smack her back.. I charged across the club, lowered the boom on the guy and proceeded to kicked the living snot out of him.
Everyone got the boot from the club as someone inside called the cops. Luckily we all took off and grabbed a cab home before the fuzz arrived.

The last incident happened 6 months ago in Itaewon. Some big drunken GI was acting like a dick at a club...we bumped each other accidently, he pushed me, I told him to fek himself...next thing I know we were being escorted outside by the bouncers with 10 people following behind us. Once we got outside the G.I charged at me and I landed a solid right to his mouth as I got inside on him and threw his ass to the ground. Little did I know the 10 people watching were the guys G.I buddies who were none too thrilled with seeing their 22 year old Tank Commander have his ass handed to him by a 29 year old Canadian businessman. All 10 of them jumped in and kicked the holy hell outta me.

A bunch of MP's arrived on the scene and saw this horde of G.I's curb stompin' me...all of them took off running when they saw the MP's. With my shirt ripped clean off, my shoes somehow gone and my face bathed in my own blood, I tore down the street after these guys to let them know that they'd have to do A LOT better than that to keep me down. Needless to say, when I arrived on the scene sporting a big smirk on my face, watching these guys get the cuffs thrown on them, they were a little more than shocked to see me.

When we got to the station we waiting around for over 5 hours (me still covered in blood with a cracked jaw and concussion) until a SOFA representative arrived. He talked to the police officers and the military guys were let go and soon after I was read my rights. That's right, I was charged with assault!

When we got transfered to the Yongsan police station, the detective told me that in a case where a non-Korean gets assaulted by a G.I, the non-Korean doesn't have a leg to stand on. First, SOFA protects them like a god damn kryptonite suit of armor and second the Korean courts are so backlogged these days that a judge won't even look at a case involving citizens from other countries.

Uhmmm, so yah, be safe ladies.

Lemme guess, Limelight? I hate that place, the bouncers there are incompetent morons. They create problems and love to fight. Korean security guards love to fight. It's that wonderful Taekwondo training where the juniors let the seniors beat on them so they can do it to juniors later on. Ahhhh, Korea. Seriously, though, GI's are ummmm great people.

Good on ya sparx.. you can see why koreans get pi**ed that G.I's appear to be immune from prosecution no matter how dumb they behave.
I'm almost ready to join an anti-U.S protest.

Yep, it was Limelight and yes the bouncers actually exacerbated the situation by throwing us both out into the same parking lot, turning their backs and walking right back inside, instead of actually handling the situation in a quasi-professional manner.

Thanks Rapier but i wouldn't go that far. I've met more than my share of solid military personellle (usually its the high ranking officers) who themsleves condemn the trashy Itaewon privates who strut around Itaewon looking to start shit.

Hell, my buddy who was right in the mix and was on receving end of some punches himself is American. I've never put this incident into an America vs. Korea context.

I can never overlook what America did for Korea 55 years ago so the thought of going near an anti-american protest makes me want to vomit in my mouth.

They were no Doubt Army Donkeys not Marines. But let me speak for Marines- I've been in fights with Marines while in the Marines- sometimes it is impossible to get out of them. But, I have avoided many many more by letting things slide. Ok, so you get insulted- you have the choice: defend your pride and hurt and be hurt, or blow it off and say, "relax dude."
With strangers you should have let it slide, as you have no future relationship with him after- it was not like you had to make him respect your Athoratah! I've been to Itawon a few times and when you got all the Army Donkeys packed in there they are sure to defend another as. You should of had some foresight and let it pass. I've been in the LImelight with nigh similar circumstances and just let it slide and comment to the harmless ESL sots at 1am (or 2am) how happy I am the Army boys have their bedtime tuck in time curfew.
