In my town, the best pizza comes from Domino's. Sad, to be sure, but unfortunately a reality. If you want a decent pizza, it's got to come from Domino's. There's no Pizza Hut, Papa John's, or anything else. It's either Domino's or one of those cruddy, cheap, Korean style pizzas. But this isn't a rant about my lack of choice of pizza restaurants. It's a rant about customer service.

As long as we've been in our backwater, one-pizza joint town, we've enjoyed an occasional pizza from Domino's. The wife and I had found a pizza that we both liked, but we had to modify it to keep us both happy. The modification consisted of adding pineapple to one of their "Screen Pizzas." Pretty minor modification, right? Anyways, here's how the conversation went:

Us: Yes, I'd like a Bacon Cheddar Cheese Pizza, but I'd like to add some pineapple.
Them: It doesn't come with pineapple.
Us: Yes, I know that, but I want pineapple on my pizza. Don't worry, I know there will be an extra charge for that, just like the last 10 times we made this exact same order.
Them: It doesn't come with pineapple. Let me ask the manager here. (Pause) He says it doesn't come with pineapple.
Us: I understand that, but I'd like to add it. I'll pay for it. Just put it on.
Them: We can't do that.
Us: Do you have pineapple?
Them: Yes.
Us: Then put some on the damn pizza and send it over here.
Them: That pizza doesn't come with pineapple.
Us: So you're telling me I can't have a pizza the way I like it? I must have it the way you say?
Them: That's right.
Us: *Expletives Deleted*
*Click*

Anyways, apparently Domino's knows better than I do about how I should have my pizza. What pissed me off further was their total lack of trying to satisfy me. It was an attitude of "if you don't like it, just f' off." I know in the grand scheme of things, taking my business elsewhere (which, in this case, means no pizza for me) doesn't matter a helluva lot to a company like Domino's, but screw them just the same.

Draven, my guess is they want you to jump through a hoop like a good little circus dog. Luckily (if I'm not mistaken) the hoop is pretty large and not too tall, and it's called "Say 'Topping' for me!"

BTW, how did you manage the other 10 times?

hehe...odd timing...

I'm working on a 3500 word paper due tonight. (well avoiding working on it might be a better way of saying it judging by my number of postings today...)

Anyway, last night I called Dominos here is Abu Dhabi. I ordered my pizza and waited. An hour later it hadn't arrived. Starving and cranky I called and got pretty annoyed with them. They told me I didn't order. I said yes I did. They said maybe you called another store...I said I hit redial to call you back. They said...you didn't order...I got loud with them. Then I hung up. Then I realized they are the only pizza I am getting so I call back and get annoyed again. I calm down and order my pizza and say thank-you..though I am sure the irritation was still in my voice.

Anyway 20 minutes later this poor guy shows up at my door with the pizza. He is ready for a tongue lashing. You can see he is a defensive posture. I gave him a good tip and sent him on his way telling him these things happen.

I realized I don't always do things 100% correct. I also realized how much I am making in this country and how much the pizza guy is making in this country. I have things good. I shouldn't be an asshole. Life here is very stratified.

1. Nationals
2. Western Expats
3. Philipinos
4. Indians
...
6. Pakastani
...
...
50. Bangladeshi

I don't want to turn into one of those western expats stomping my feet because "How DARE they treat me that way..."

While I appreciate your response, sadly, that wasn't the issue and you are mistaken. I should've stated that the conversation happened entirely in Korean, and I paraphrased it here. And it wasn't me, with my limited Korean language skills, but rather my very fluent and very Korean wife.

We used to make the order online, but the wife couldn't figure out where the 'add topping' buttons where, that's why we called. The 'add topping' buttons have been removed. Check it out for yourself.

Damn! Hate it when I'm wrong like that. Evil or Very Mad

Anyway, I'll say it with you then: Domino's Blows!! Mad

I'd try ordering the Bacon & Cheddar w/a pineapple topping here right now, just so we can compare "service quality levels", but I don't like pineapple on my pizza. Sad Wait! Idea I can place the order, then cancel it before I hang up!

Giving it a try...

Okay, done. They said they'd do it -- Bacon & Cheddar + pineapple. Thing is, this is the nationwide number (1588-3082), not the branch that will be making & delivering the actual pizza. (The hypothetical-actual pizza, as I canceled the order at the end of the call Razz )

I knew it could be done, even when they said it couldn't. We did call the nationwide number, as a matter of fact, but thanks for including it anyway. It'll remind me which number NOT to call next time, we entertain the idea of a pizza and beer night. There's something to be said for taking care of your customers...

Confused

So, it's only your branch of Domino's that won't put the pineapple on the Bacon & Cheddar?

As I said, we called the nationwide number after trying to order online. They told us they couldn't/wouldn't do it.

Edit: Fixed quoting error.

Do what I did...

Well it was with KFC in Mokdong. I went in and I was third in line.
It was a nice sunny day 3 in the afternoon. I put in my order, a simple two piece combo... The girl tells me it will take 20 mins! I said, why?!
She said the customer before me ordered all the chicken. I look over and the adjumma before me is sitting down and having a salad. Next to her are the two high school girls who were before the adjumma happily slurping away their ice creams. I point and say no CHICKEN! The girl says are you gonna wait?! I say no! I went back to my office and looked up KFC. I called their head office and complained. I swear no more than a month later the KFC closed down and now it's a Starbucks! Shocked

Maybe it won't work for you but here are the numbers for Dominos!

1588-3082 or 02-6446-3077 or 080-860-3082

It's too late for this advice this time, but when you look for a new job, don't consider any city without a Mr. Pizza.

I seem to recall many Korean pizza places had a problem with adding toppings. They tended to fear variation from the menu choices (bulgogi pizza, supreme, etc.) as if adding or taking out an ingredient was beyond their ability. Once in awhile they got it right, though.

Hmm. This is odd, as I've now placed the same order a second time, and this time I'm getting a whole different story than an hour or so ago. Here's the new drill as they gave it to me:

As of 1 May 2005, Domino's will NOT let you have ANY extra topping that isn't already present on the pizza. So, you want a topping for the Bacon & Cheddar pizza, do you? Fine. Pick from these: Bacon or Cheddar Cheese. Oh yeah, and Onions or , since those are already on the pizza as well, apparently.

So, I guess no more Domino's pepperoni + mushroom pizza for the Guru. This sucks. And I'll be damned if I'm ordering those boutique-price designer pizzas they've recently rolled out. Swiss Fondue Pizza indeed! Blechh! Mad

Oddly, I feel vindicated.
