Isn't there anybody on this forum who would be interested in doing a weensy little marathon in the fall? It's not that hard or anything. Fun! And you probably get a little cheap medal you can take home as a souvenir.
If nobody will join me, could somebody translate my plea into Korean and post it on a website frequented by Koreans? I'm sure there are some Koreans with guts enough. |

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't heard of them. I also recently remembered a site called Adventure Korea (http://www.adventurekorea.com) that I'd seen before crossing the pond. I'm trying to make contact with both groups. Though, they are paying deals, and my favorite thing about running is it's free! |

There are about a million marathons in S. Korea. I picked out one called the Kwangju marathon. I found an article, a couple of years old. It went offline the other day, but Google has a cache, and I quoted the text below. The current website for the race is only in Korean: http://marathon.donga.com/gyeongju.html. However, I'm flexible. This one is Oct 30, i think.
Training for a beginner means running for 45 minutes or so about 3 times a week, then doing a LONG RUN on the weekend, first one about an hour and gradually increasing to about 20 miles. I want to find a partner to meet somewhere and do the long runs together on Sundays. This site has some sample training plans, but I'll admit when I did my first I started off easier.

If you fancy travelling to somewhere really different to do a marathon than this is one to consider.
The Dong A race (named after the local newspaper that sponsors the event) is an intriguing marathon and one that��s worth putting in the diary.
South Korea, whilst not at the top of many people��s tourist destinations is a fascinating country and offers a great many travel opportunities. Away from the capital Seoul and an hours flight south is the city of Kyongju, home to a race that has a turbulent history and always provides more than its fair share of surprises.
Kyongju, or more specifically the area around Pomun Lake resort a few miles north, is a major South Korean holiday resort packed with locals enjoying the sunshine on race weekend. The race attracts families from all over the country but very few from overseas.
Inevitably communication here is a problem making registration something of an experience. Thankfully at the hotel in Pomun used as race H.Q. there was someone who spoke English and we managed to complete the formalities eventually.
In 1997 this race was run in sub-zero temperatures but twelve months later the sun was strong and there was barely a cloud in the sky. Unfortunately the change in the weather conditions caused chaos from start to finish.
The race began in Kyongju Public Stadium, a huge arena decked out in advertising hoardings and a hot air balloon declaring it as a venue for the 2002 soccer World Cup. It was a magnificent setting and a great place to start the race. By start time it was packed, as not only was there the full marathon but also a half and a ��short�� marathon.
The course was a loop, from Kjongju out to Pomun Lake and back to Kyongju. It was a fascinating twenty six miles, not particularly because it was an interesting course but because of the cultural experience, running in the heart of Korea, for most of us not a common everyday experience.
Unfortunately it was ruined to an extent by the lack of water at the drinks stops. This was simply a miscalculation by the organisers who judged potential demand on that of the previous year��s race, run in cold conditions. Another problem was that the water was provided in 2 litre bottles rather than cups. By the time most of the runners arrived at the drinks stations, those in front had grabbed the bottles, taken a few sips and thrown them away. For about 10 miles most of the field had nothing to drink, and this in temperatures of nearly 30C!
That aside this is a race you��ll never forget; a chance to see a fascinating country and meet a unique group of people. Well worth a try.
